Islanders’ best is not enough to beat one of the NHL’s worst

DETROIT — Sometimes you play well and lose — to one of the worst teams in the NHL.
Unfortunately for the Islanders, that’s the pill they’re going to have to swallow after suffering a 2-1 defeat the hands of the Red Wings on Saturday afternoon.
It seemed as if, had the game kept going and had the Islanders kept controlling they play, they eventually were going to tie it. But when the final horn sounded, Detroit backup goalie Jonathan Bernier had stopped 41 of 42 shots and the Islanders had left with a loss.
The Islanders (41-23-7) were seemingly out of their small lull, having won two big games this past week over fellow Eastern Conference postseason hopefuls the Blue Jackets and the Canadiens. They came in having won four of their past five, putting them back within striking distance of the Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
