Alabama Governor Signs Strict Abortion Bill Into Law

The law bans abortions at all stages of pregnancy, with the only exception being when the mother’s life is at risk. Rape and incest cases are also banned from abortions.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed an abortion bill into law Wednesday evening, making the southern state the toughest in the nation to restrict early-term abortions. The law could also potentially challenge the Roe vs. Wade decision.
The law bans abortions at all stages of pregnancy, with the only exception being when the mother’s life is at risk. Rape and incest cases are also banned from abortions, and doctors who perform abortions can have charges brought against them, with a possibility of facing 99 years in prison.
Ivey released a statement that said her state’s resident believe “every life is a sacred gift from God.”
“To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God,” Ivey said.
The state senate passed the bill Tuesday night, setting off a firestorm of comments across the nation, and moving Alabama to a growing field of states imposing tougher abortion laws.
