Protesters braved a drenching thunderstorm in the nation’s capital Friday for the city’s eighth consecutive day of demonstrations demanding an end to police violence against African Americans.
Even as thunder and lightening threatened the region, a large crowd gathered near the White House and listened to the voice of Martin Luther King Jr., as his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech boomed from a nearby sound system.
Cheers and applause erupted as King’s voice came to this line: “Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest.”
Seemingly undeterred by weather warnings, protesters got out their ponchos and umbrellas and chanted “Black Lives Matter!” and “No peace! No justice!” Some used their hand-made protest signs as head coverings, as they gathered near a recently erected fence preventing them from moving closer to the White House.
