Historical statues of Christopher Columbus and Frederick Douglass were found vandalized over the weekend in both Connecticut and New York.
NEW YORK — Historical statues were found vandalized over the weekend in both Connecticut and New York. In Waterbury, Connecticut, a statue of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus was discovered beheaded. Many blame Columbus for the genocide and exploitation of Native Americans. The mayor of Waterbury said he’s committed to addressing inequities caused by systemic racism, but he called the vandalism unacceptable. Meanwhile, a statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was ripped from its base in Rochester, New York on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches, delivered in that city in 1852.
