Pfizer and BioNTech announced a $1.95 billion deal with the federal government for pre-purchase of 100 million doses of their experimental vaccine candidate. The companies said they plan to begin final Phase 2 testing and Phase 3 clinical trials by the end of the month, according to a news release Wednesday. They said they hope to begin the regulatory approval process to get a vaccine licensed by the Food and Drug Administration as early as October. The release said the U. S. government will pay the companies upon the receipt of the first 100 million doses, following FDA authorization or approval. It was not clear if the payment would be made if the vaccine were not approved by the FDA. Pfizer did not immediately respond to a request for clarification. The agreement gives the United States an option to buy an additional 500 million doses. Americans will receive the vaccine for free “consistent with the U.
