Star Trek: Picard season 2 is on the way, and this is what we know about it so far.
Such was the confidence CBS has in the show, Star Trek: Picard season 2 was confirmed even before the first had started. Then that support was rewarded, and then some: after a strong start, an excellent finale left us desperate for more. That said, news about the next season has been thin on the ground of late. Frankly, there hasn’t been a huge amount of news about what the second season will look like at all, nor when the release date will be. The coronavirus pandemic already prevented the start of shooting in the middle of June, but it’s looking like it’ll be able to resume in early 2021. The story of season 1 was full of intrigue and mystery that kept us hooked over the course of its action-packed ten episodes and contributed to the wider Trek canon in engrossing ways. But what’s in store for the second season? We know that season 2 won’t be covering old ground, and the story will feature “startling events,” according to Stewart. More on that below. However there are a few tidbits of information we’ve gathered, so here’s everything we know about Star Trek: Picard season 2. Spoilers follow from the first season, so make sure you’re all caught up before reading on. No official date has been set for season 2 of Star Trek: Picard yet, but the early renewal suggests a 2021 release. Filming was due to start in June, but this was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, which is currently halting the production of all CBS shows. However, in an interview with Pod Syndicate, Evan Evagora (Elnor) said “yeah, January we will be filming.” However, this may end up benefiting the show’s script. Speaking to Collider, Goldsman explained that “it is fundamentally a gift to spend more time with the scripts. This kind of 10-hour narrative has set-ups and payoffs that requires a more thoughtful view of the object once it’s been created.” Based on how Star Trek: Discovery has been released with more than a year-long gap between seasons, it’s likely we’ll almost certainly now see Star Trek: Picard season 2 later in 2021. Even before the first episode of Star Trek: Picard aired on January 23, CBS All Access had announced its renewal for a second series. At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, it was officially revealed that Patrick Stewart would be returning for another season. “The energy and excitement around the premiere of Picard has reached a magnitude greater than all of us could have hoped for,” CBS said. “We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season.” While we may not much about season 2’s story, we do know that the broad strokes of it have been agreed. Speaking to Collider, Goldsman said “We know what it is” and “we learned a lot from season 1.” That said, it seems like the story may be less dark this time, too. In the same Collider chat, Goldsman likened season 1 to “the first act of a movie […] it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end.” We do at least know that season 2 is going to boldly go to completely new places and destinations, and that “it is going to be extraordinary,” Sir Patrick Stewart told Gold Derby.
