Hill was killed by a white policeman who may have mistaken a cellphone Hill was carrying for a firearm.
The city of Columbus, Ohio, will pay a $10 million settlement to the family of Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man shot to death by a white police officer last December, the latest in a series of multimillion-dollar payments arising from police violence against Blacks. “The Hill family will never be whole,” said city attorney Zach Klein on Friday in an appearance with Hill’s family. “No amount of money will ever bring Andre’ Hill back to his family, but we believe this is an important and necessary step in the right direction.” Hill,47, was fatally shot by Adam Coy, a white Columbus police officer on Dec.22 as he came out of a garage holding a cellphone. Coy, who had a long history of complaints from civilians, was fired from the force in January for not activating his body camera during his confrontation with Hill and for failing to immediately provide medical aid to the victim. Police eventually took Hill to the hospital where he died.
