Facebook, Twitter on collision course with Indian govt over new social media norms

These are obviously not the best of times of for social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in India. They have until May 26 to comply with new social media intermediary guidelines. Also, Twitter and Indian government seem to be involved in a separate fight.
Popular social media platforms seem to be set for a big battle in India as the deadline to meet the new guidelines laid out by the government is fast approaching — May 26, to be precise. Going by reports, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are yet to appoint a resident grievance officer, a chief compliance officer, and a nodal contact person, who shall be reachable round the clock. They will also have to set up a local office in India. The new rules announced in February require all significant social media intermediaries to designate personnel for these roles by May 26. Social media companies that have more than 50 lakh users in India are designated ‘significant social media intermediaries’. The new rules also mandated major social media intermediaries to have a physical contact address in India published on their websites or mobile applications or both.
