Detroit police officer charged with manslaughter in crash killing attorney Cliff Woodards

A Detroit police officer has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and willful neglect of duty in connection with a vehicle collision on Detroit’s west side that killed a 58-year-old attorney and media personality Cliff Woodards. “It’s a very tragic event for all involved,” Detroit Police Interim Chief James White said Thursday. “My heart and prayers go out to the Woodards family,” He added that the department would let the judicial process play out. Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged officer Teaira Funderburg,29, with the 15-year felony and one-year misdemeanor, noting that while Woodards “was respected in his profession” the facts and evidence led to the decision. “Proper investigations take time and that is what we strive for in every case,” Worthy said in prepared remarks.
