California schools will still require masks despite CDC guidelines

The CDC said Friday, July 9, that vaccinated students and teachers don’t need to wear masks indoors, but state officials said they will continue to require it.
Students and teachers will still need to wear masks while indoors at school, state officials announced Friday, July 9, after the federal Centers for Disease Control had said that wasn’t necessary. The requirement will help make sure every student is treated the same, California Department of Public Health officials said. And school facilities can’t accommodate enough physical distancing, so mandatory masking and “robust testing” will continue, said Dr. Mark Ghaly, California Health & Human Services Agency Secretary. “We applaud the CDC’s commitment to ensuring that schools are fully, safely opened for in-person instruction,” Ghaly said in a news release. “… Masking is a simple and effective intervention that does not interfere with offering full in-person instruction.
