Oppo’s latest Reno 6 Pro 5G smartphone comes as the showstopper with its sparkling design, and its performance is also good. But it leaves us wanting more. So, is the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G a good phone for Rs 39,990? India Today Tech finds out in this review.
Oppo’s Reno phones have always been about exquisite designs and wonderful cameras. The latest phone to show off those two things as much as it can is the Reno 6 Pro 5G. Originally launched in China back in May, the Reno 6 Pro 5G comes with all the razzmatazz that you have come to associate Reno phones with, and, unsurprisingly, it will remind you of the predecessor Reno 5 Pro 5G that arrived back in January. For what it is worth, Oppo’s Reno 6 Pro 5G comes across as a good and well-built phone at a starting price of Rs 39,990. Oppo told me that it has kept in mind how Indian customers engage with their phones, especially during the pandemic, while making the new Reno phones. While that sounds immensely significant for the latest Reno 6 Pro 5G, I am a bit concerned about the price. With the fact that Oppo believes that the Reno 6 Pro will appeal to customers at that price in my mind, I took the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G out for a spin and here is my review. The moment you lay eyes on the Reno 6 Pro 5G, you are going to be spellbound by that design. The sparkly finish reflecting light in several colours is a sight to behold, and that is not an exaggeration. I have always wondered how Oppo is able to achieve such exquisite designs on its phones. On asking Oppo about it, I got my answer, but I was still looking for the process. I guess Oppo will someday release a video on how it achieves such phone designs, but until then, let us talk a little more about the design. Oppo calls this the Reno Glow design, and it has become one of the important things for the smartphone series. According to the company, there is a dedicated process behind this design, and it involves the use of an AG Glass that has both a matte finish and a shiny appearance. Too much shine would have made the Reno 6 Pro 5G a bit over-the-top, but Oppo found the right mix and I absolutely love this design. The phone has a metal edge frame, the top portion of which also has glass sandwiched. The backside of the phone has the rear cameras in a rectangular module that juts out. This module has four cameras, an LED flash, and some text that says «64MP AI QUAD-CAM». Towards the bottom, on the right side, you have the Oppo branding. That is it. There is nothing so bizarre as the «Dare to Leap» slogan on Oppo phones, which is a relief. Unfortunately, the phone misses out on a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is why the accompanying earphones have a USB-C jack. The phone has a single speaker on the bottom. It is loud enough for movies, music, and games, but for this price, I would have loved dual stereo speakers on the Reno 6 Pro 5G. Holding the phone in your hands is an experience that you would not have had before. Most phones are tall, but the Reno 6 Pro 5G is a bit wider too. And because of this balance, the grip is excellent. Reaching the top portion of the screen to pull down the notification drawer is so convenient. The phone edges are well rounded and blunt, so the palm does not feel any pressure, either. Displays on Reno phones have been nothing but beautiful. The Reno 6 Pro 5G has a 6.55-inch Super AMOLED display with Full-HD+ resolution and support for a 90Hz refresh rate. There is protection from Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top, along with 3D curved edges. This is a bright display, and when I used the phone under direct sunlight, I could easily read the text and watch Instagram Reels. The colours look fantastic on display, so watching videos is an enjoyable experience. The Reno 6 Pro 5G has HDR10+ support, too, which you will find useful when watching HDR videos at up to 4K resolution on YouTube and up to 1080p resolution on Disney+ Hotstar.
