LeBron James, other Lakers confirm being vaccinated for COVID-19

James says he initially felt “skepticism” regarding the vaccine but ultimately decided to get it for the well-being of himself, his family and his team.
EL SEGUNDO — When COVID-19 vaccines rolled out, LeBron James, like many Americans, had his doubts. But he’s learned enough to roll up his sleeve and get a shot. After skirting the subject of vaccines and vaccinations dating to last season, James finally addressed the issue head-on on Tuesday – just as many other NBA teams are reckoning with the consequences of having unvaccinated players. During media day at the team’s practice facility, the Lakers star confirmed that he has been vaccinated, putting the Lakers on the path to being 100% vaccinated by opening night on Oct.19. “I know that I was very skeptical about it all,” James said. “But after doing my research and things of that nature, I felt like it was best suited, not only for me but for my family and my friends. And that’s why I decided to do it.” This NBA season has already found itself shadowed by controversy over vaccines, as high-profile stars like Bradley Beal, Kyrie Irving and Andrew Wiggins have questioned the effectiveness of the shots which have now gained FDA approval. The NBA hasn’t mandated vaccines for players, but there will be more restrictive testing and distancing procedures in place for non-vaccinated personnel. This has led to uncomfortable planning around restrictions that could keep those players off the court: After having a religious exemption rejected by the league last week, Wiggins is one of the players in danger of not being able to suit up for Golden State Warriors home games. In this environment, the fully vaccinated teams could gain a competitive advantage.
