The select committee investigating the Jan.6 Capitol riot is threatening to refer contempt of Congress charges to individuals who do not comply with its subpoenas. “We will not allow any witnesses to defy a lawful subpoena or attempt to run out the clock, and we will swiftly consider advancing a criminal contempt of Congress referral,” Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson and Vice Chair Liz Cheney said in a joint statement released Friday. The committee announced on Sept.23 that it issued subpoenas to four senior aides to former President Donald Trump: former chief strategist Steve Bannon, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former Defense Department Chief of Staff Kash Patel and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Dan Scavino. Trump has argued that executive privilege protects his top advisors from testifying in front of the committee, and a lawyer for Bannon said Thursday that Bannon would wait for federal courts to decide whether or not he is required to testify.
