Paris Hilton Leads Online Joy Over End of Britney Spears Conservatorship

A California judge ruled that the restrictive measures over the pop star’s life were “no longer required.”
A number of celebrities have taken to social media to welcome the ending of the conservatorship of singer Britney Spears. Spears’ father, Jamie Spears had asked in February 2008 to put his daughter under conservatorship after she was placed on two involuntary psychiatric holds. In courtroom testimony in June, Spears said the arrangement, usually reserved for the very ill or old, was abusive and deprived her of basic rights. But on Friday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny ruled a termination of the conservatorship. After the ruling which was hailed by the #FreeBritney movement who had campaigned for her release, the 39-year-old star wrote on Instagram “I love my fans so much, it’s crazy!!!” Spears wrote. “I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day!!!! Best day ever…” Her fiancé Sam Asghari wrote on Instagram: “History was made today,” “Britney is Free!” Paris Hilton was among other celebrities who weighed in with messages of support as the FreeBritney hashtag buzzing around social media over the last few months was swapped for the past tense.
