Sixteen Flames players as well as Coach Darryl Sutter and associate coach Kirk Muller are currently in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols. The teams are scheduled to meet next Tuesday in Canada.
ANAHEIM — An alarming spike in COVID-19 cases among the Calgary Flames’ players, coaches and staff members has jeopardized the Ducks’ game next Tuesday at Scotiabank Saddledome, and renewed concerns around the league that additional safety measures must be put in place to stem the spread. The NHL on Wednesday postponed a fourth Calgary game, a scheduled home date Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Ducks are scheduled to be the next team to visit Calgary, after beginning a three-game Western Canadian trip Monday against the Oilers in Edmonton. Sixteen Flames players are currently in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol, including forward Johnny Gaudreau and goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Coach Darryl Sutter and associate coach Kirk Muller also are in the protocol. Anyone who is placed into the protocol must be quarantined for 10 days. “As an appropriate precaution, the team’s training facilities will remain closed for players until further notice,” the league said, referring to the Flames, in a statement. “The league is in the process of reviewing and revising the Flames’ regular-season schedule, and will provide a further update next week.
