SC4 celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with songs and words to reflect on his legacy

Community members gathered Monday evening to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the St. Clair County Community College’s annual reflection on the holiday. “I’m so pleased to be here today,” said Alphonso Amos, Michigan’s program director for StreetWise Partners. “It is a great honor to be here celebrating the legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. …His message of non-violent, peaceful protest is pertinent now as it was in his lifetime.” This year’s theme, “Where Are We Now,” was a continuation of last years theme of “Where Do We Go From Here,” in which the panel of speakers and artists focused on King’s message of inequities and how the community can come together to overcome inequalities amidst the pandemic. This year’s theme brought together many community members and leaders to talk about the importance of building upon Black legacies through songs, dance and spoken words. “This is an opportunity to honor Dr. King for identifying the injustices that still exist,” said Jessica Brown, director of SC4’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
