LGBTQ Representation Smashed Records This TV Season, Says GLAAD

TV and movies featured more gays, more lesbians, more transgender characters and more LGBTQ people of color than ever before, according to GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer media advocacy organization.

On Thursday, GLAAD released its annual Where We Are on TV report, which for the first time included five streaming services in its yearly count of LGBTQ characters: Amazon, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Paramount+ and Peacock. According to the organization: “The growing state of LGBTQ representation on television is a signal that Hollywood is truly starting to recognize the power of telling LGBTQ stories that audiences around the world connect with,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. “At a time when anti-LGBTQ legislation and violence continues to increase, it is cultural institutions like television that take on the crucial role of changing hearts and minds through diverse and inclusive storytelling.
