History was made Sunday in Beijing at the 2022 Winter Olympics when American speedskater Erin Jackson won gold in the 500 meters. Jackson,29, became the first Black woman to win gold in an individual sport at the Winter Olympics, according to U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee historian Bill Mallon. American bobsledder Kaillie Humphries is halfway to a gold medal in the debut of women’s monobob. Humphries took a commanding lead after the first two heats on Sunday with the final two set for Monday morning in Beijing (Sunday night in the U.S.). U.S. teammate Elana Meyers Taylor also remains in strong contention for a medal, sitting fourth in the standings after the first two runs. Despite the cloud hanging over figure skating because of the failed drug test of Russian star Kamila Valieva — the Court of Arbitration for Sport is expected to announce a ruling on Valieva’s eligibility Monday afternoon — competitions continue with the long program in ice dancing to decide the medals. U.S. pairs sit third and fourth entering the final skate. And women’s hockey moves onto the semifinal round when Canada takes on Switzerland and Team USA faces Finland to determine which teams will move onto the gold-medal match.
