Phil Mickelson committed to play in the inaugural LIV Golf event at Centurion Club in Hertfordshire, England, which begins on Thursday. In his statement released on Monday he said that he had been in touch with organizers of golf’s four majors and he was under the impression that he would be able to play in the majors. The USGA had been mum on its thoughts of the breakaway tour headed by Greg Norman and backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. But Tuesday afternoon the USGA released a statement that said players who had already qualified for next week’s U.S. Open at The Country Club will be allowed to compete.
“We pride ourselves in being the most open championship in the world and the players who have earned the right to compete in this year’s championship, both via exemption and qualifying, will have the opportunity to do so,” the USGA statement said.
