CDC Director Walensky Announces Major Agency Changes After Covid Missteps

The agency’s response to Covid-19 did “not reliably meet expectations,” director Rochelle Walensky said.
Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced Wednesday she will make major modifications to the agency’s structure, including staffing changes and efforts to improve public messaging, after she said the agency failed to adequately respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to multiple outlets.
“For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for Covid-19, and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet expectations. I want us all to do better and it starts with CDC leading the way.  My goal is a new, public health action-oriented culture at CDC that emphasizes accountability, collaboration, communication and timeliness,” Walensky said in a statement, according to multiple outlets.
