Biden's closing argument: GOP threatens democracy

Previewing Joe Biden’s speech tonight ahead of next week’s midterms, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters the president is making an appeal to voters because of “an alarming number of Republican officials” who are “being very clear they’re not going to accept the results of these elections.”
She offered no examples to back her claim as polls indicate a growing “red wave” in which Republicans are competitive in many Democratic strongholds and are poised to regain the House and the Senate.
Biden is scheduled to speak at about 7 p.m. Eastern Time in the Columbus Club in Union Station, near the Capitol.
White House communications adviser Anita Dunn explained Wednesday the venue is Capitol Hill “because that’s where there was an attempt to subvert our democracy,” referring to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Dunn brought up the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi last week by a man whose statements to authorities demonstrated signs of severe mental illness.
“Obviously we’ve seen horrible things happen quite recently – the speaker’s husband,” she said in Washington, DC.
The host of the speech, the Democratic National Committee, said it will be about “preserving and protecting our democracy” and “the threat of election deniers and those who seek to undermine faith in voting and democracy.”
In a primetime speech Sept. 1 at Independence Hall, Biden – flanked by U.S. Marine Corps in a ghoulish, red-lit background – Biden sounded a similar theme.
