Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday for shooting hip hop artist Megan Thee Stallion at a party more than three years ago, according to multiple reports, marking the end of the high-profile case that roiled the music industry and highlighted what critics have called a deep-rooted misogyny in hip-hop.Key Facts

Lanez’s sentencing—which was three years less than the 13 years asked for by the prosecution, Meghann Cuniff reports—comes after five delays and happened three months after he switched lawyers and filed a motion for a new trial, which was denied.

Lanez has been in jail since December, when he was convicted of three felony charges related to the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion: assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

His attorneys argued he should be sentenced to probation and ordered to enter a residential substance abuse program, but prosecutors highlighted Lanez’s “high level of callousness” in the shooting and said he deserved a lengthy prison sentence for shooting the singer “without any justifiable provocation or reason” while she was “unarmed and completely defenseless.
