Starfield may not have support for AMD’s FSR 3 yet, but it now supports Nvidia’s DLSS 2 thanks to a modder.
Starfield officially releases to the general public today, September 6, and a modder has already added a feature that will benefit a large group of gamers, but there is a catch. The mod for Starfield enables DLSS 3 support, which means Nvidia GPU users can get improved performance even though AMD and Bethesda have only implemented support for AMD’s own FSR 3 upscaling technology.
Bethesda and AMD have partnered to bring the latest and greatest graphical technologies to Starfield, a space action RPG that is being touted as the next Skyrim. The game comes with support for AMD FreeSync, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), and more. FSR 3 is the latest version of the upscaling technology that brings frame generation, similar to what Nvidia offers with its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS 3) tech. AMD states FSR 3 can significantly improve FPS and in some cases get double the frame rate. Notably, Starfield only supports FSR 2 at launch.
Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield is a sci-fi action role-playing game where players interact with multiple factions, engage in combat, customize their main character and ship, as well as explore a universe that features over 100 systems and 1,000 planets.
Now, a modder by the name of PureDark has released a mod that adds support for DLSS 3 to Starfield. PureDark had promised to deliver the mod before the game left early access and was successfully able to do so. Starfield players can download the mod and run the game on their supported Nvidia graphics cards even though the game does not officially support it. The mod is available on NexusMods and is the most popular one for now.
It is also interesting to note that AMD has not added support for FSR 3 to Starfield yet, and it is unclear if the game will ever get the new technology.
