The gunman, a 33-year-old transient man, had a history of mental health issues and had been a patient at the hospital in the past, according to court records.
New Hampshire officials identified the gunman, who they say walked into a Concord hospital on Friday afternoon and fatally shot a 63-year-old security officer.
Officials said John Madore shot and killed Bradley Haas, of Franklin, who was working as a New Hampshire Department of Safety security officer, Attorney General John Formella said.
Police said Madore walked into the New Hampshire State Hospital just after 3:30 p.m. Friday, armed with a 9mm pistol with additional ammunition, and shot Haas, before being shot and killed by a state trooper.
Madore, a 33-year-old transient man, had a history of mental health issues and had been a patient at the hospital in the past, according to court records obtained by WMUR.
Madore was a defendant in an assault case in 2016 and was facing charges of second-degree assault, simple assault, and reckless conduct.
A judge ordered Madore to undergo a competency evaluation as part of the case, and the results were sealed in 2017. It is unclear why the charges were eventually dropped.
Madore had recently spent time in both the Seacoast and Concord areas and had worked as a peer support specialist at Riverbend Community Mental Health for about one month in the summer of 2019, according to WMUR.
Former prosecutor Patricia LaFrance told WMUR that Madore would have been considered a patient at the state hospital during the time his case was in front of the court.
„It looks to me, almost seven years ago now, that this person at one point would have been in the New Hampshire State Hospital and that he would have needed to be transferred to the superior court for some type of status conference,“ LaFrance said.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office provided little information on Madore’s background, motive, or possible connections to the hospital.
