Uvalde Families Agree to $2M Settlement So City Won't Go Bankrupt

The settlement will leave each family with about $100,000 in compensation.
The families of 19 victims of the Robb Elementary School school shooting have reached a settlement with the city and county of Uvalde for a relatively meager sum that they said will ensure the city does not face bankruptcy.
The $2 million settlement, which will be split among the 19 families, includes a promise from city officials to reform the Uvalde Police Department.
“For two long years, we have languished in pain and without any accountability from the law enforcement agencies and officers who allowed our families to be destroyed that day,” Veronica Luevanos, whose daughter, Jailah, and nephew, Jayce, were killed, said in a statement.
“This settlement reflects a first good faith effort, particularly by the City of Uvalde, to begin rebuilding trust in the systems that failed to protect us.”
The settlement comes two days before the two-year anniversary of the May 24, 2022 mass shooting, when an 18-year-old gunman used a high-powered rifle to massacre 19 students and two teachers at the elementary school. Hundreds of law enforcement officials descended on the active shooting but waited more than an hour to breach a classroom and kill the gunman.
The $2 million settlement reflects the limit of Uvalde County’s insurance policy.
