Iran says 'indirect talks' taking place with US over nuclear programme

The talks have come after US president Donald Trump warned Iran it would be in “great danger” if a deal wasn’t reached between the two countries.
Iran says “indirect talks” over the country’s rapidly advancing nuclear programme are under way with US officials.
The discussions on Saturday were taking place in Muscat, Oman, with the host nation’s officials mediating between representatives of Iran and the US, who were seated in separate rooms, according to Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry.
He also told Iran’s state TV he didn’t expect “this round of talks to be long”.
“This is a beginning. So it is normal at this stage for the two sides to present to each other their fundamental positions through the Omani intermediary”, he said.
Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday said there was a “chance for initial understanding on further negotiations if the other party (US) enters the talks with an equal stance”.
