CM Punk defeated Gunther at WWE SummerSlam 2025 to win the world championship only for Seth Rollins to spoil the party.
WWE SummerSlam 2025 marked a dream match for the ages as CM Punk battled Gunther for Raw’s most prestigious title, the World Heavyweight Championship.
Punk earned the right to face “The Ring General” at WWE’s summer spectacle by winning a 5-man gauntlet match on Raw a few weeks ago, outlasting some of the red brand’s top stars, including Bron Breakker and Jey Uso. With Gunther finally moving on from his long-running feud with Uso, he and Punk clashed in a highlightly anticipated match in MetLife Stadium.
Despite reports that Seth Rollins would return from his injury hiatus to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, there was no sign of “The Visionary” in New Jersey. Instead, Gunther and Punk battled it out in an instant classic for the coveteed World Heavyweight title.

At WWE SummerSlam 2025, CM Punk accomplished something that he hadn’t done in more than a decade: he became world champion.
The beloved babyface battled it out with Gunther in a match that was, as you might expect, absolutely fantastic. Some of the key moments in the match were:
After a slow start dominated by Gunther, Punk nearly hit a GTS but Gunther wiggled out and almost locked in a sleeper before cutting off Gunther with a big boot.
Gunther nearly knocked Punk out of the ring with a massive chop but pulled him back in the ring in an effort to enact more punishment.
After a slightly botched move that looked like an attempted spinebuster by Punk, Gunther locked in a sharpshooter submission. Punk, however, countered into a Figure Four leglock before flipping over into a modified sharpshooter, but Gunther got to the ropes.
Punk and Gunther engaged in an exchange of strikes, with the crowd firmly behind Punk with a loud chorus of “yays.” Punk got Gunther with a heel kick and then began to make a comeback. He went for the running knee in the corner, but Gunther countered with a powerbomb for a two-count.
