Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix is publicly defending a so-called animal rescuer facing jail time for stealing chickens from a Petaluma, California, slaughterhouse.
Phoenix, best known for starring in the 2019 “Joker” film, said Zoe Rosenberg’s charges over the June 2023 incident are “a moral failure” in a Monday statement released by the advocacy groups Direct Action Everywhere (DEX) and the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project. A jury convicted Rosenberg in October of felony conspiracy and misdemeanor crimes for a scheme against Petaluma Poultry that involved a fellow activist and fake uniforms, according to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office.
