Japan and Senegal ended their game in a 2-2 draw Sunday in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage in front of a crowd of 32,572.
June 24 (UPI) — Japan and Senegal ended their game in a 2-2 draw Sunday in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage. The Group H game was played in front of a crowd of 32,572.
The opening goal was scored in the 11th minute by Senegal forward Sadio Mane. Senegal’s other score came in the 71st minute by defender Moussa Wague, the youngest African player (born October 4,1998) to score at the world championships.
Japan’s scoring players were Takashi Inui (34th minute) and Keisuke Honda (78th minute).
Princess Hisako Takamado of Japan, who arrived in Yekaterinburg late Friday, attended the game to support her national team.
Sunday’s game marked the fourth encounter between Japan and Senegal. Previously, two friendlies were won by Senegal and one game ended in a draw.
Japan and Senegal currently share the top place in Group H with four points each.
Japan will play their next group stage game against Poland in Volgograd, and Senegal will face Colombia in Samara. Both matches will take place on June 28.
