The delightfully cheesy 1970s TV classic “Fantasy Island” is set to become a feature-length movie backed by a major production company, according to a report Tuesday.
Entertainment firms Blumhouse and Sony Pictures are teaming up on a reboot of the show, which centers on the mysterious Mr. Roarke — and his little-person sidekick Tattoo — who fly wealthy guests to the island to live out their wildest dreams, Deadline.com reported .
Jeff Wadlow, whose recent works include the horror flick “Truth Or Dare” and the action comedy “True Memoirs Of An International Assassin,” will direct the movie, according to the entertainment news site.
The quirky ABC series was the brainchild of “Beverly Hills, 90210” creator Aaron Spelling, who once admitted the show’s original pitch was just a joke.
It ran from 1977 to 1984, featuring corny opening credits in which Tattoo hollers, “Boss, de plane, de plane!” But the show also tackled dark themes about nature, witchcraft and the supernatural. It starred Ricardo Montalban and Herve Villechaize.
Wadlow’s past projects include directing the black superhero comedy “Kick-Ass 2” and the martial arts flick “Never Back Down.” He worked with Blumhouse on “Truth Or Dare,” which grossed $100 million worldwide on a $5 million budget.
A projected release date for the “Fantasy Island” film has not yet been announced.
