Despite the backlash that Treyarch initially received for the removal of a campaign, Black Ops 4 has had immediate success and hit $500 million on its opening weekend.
Despite the mild backlash that Treyarch has received for its decision to omit a traditional single-player mode and implement a battle royale mode into Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the majority of the gamer population has accepted Blackout with open arms, and now Treyarch has the sales numbers to prove it made the right choice. Earlier today Activision announced that its newly published addition to the Call of Duty franchise earned over $500 million during its first three days on the market.
When Treyarch announced that it would be substituting out its conventional single-player campaign for a battle royale mode, many fans and reporters speculated that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 would see a hit in sales. As time passed and more trailers and information became public, fans began anticipating Treyarch’s take on a battle royale, and once the beta for Blackout began, it was clear to fans that Blackout is unique. The beta was seen as a massive success and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 quickly became one of the most anticipated games of 2018.
Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Call of Duty franchise, Rob Kostich, commented on the immediate success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 saying, “Our player counts and hours played are up year over year, our viewership on Twitch has set new standards and is showing just how fun Blackout is to play and watch, and the weekend results yet again put Call of Duty at that highest tier of entertainment.”
Kostich also stated that the digital sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 broke records across all platforms, which seems to only increase year by year. While colossal opening sales weekends are nothing new to such a well-known and established franchise, the initial success and recognition that Blackout has received shows the that the battle royale genre is not just a fad, but is here to stay.
Although Blackout has been the headliner for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, it, by no means, should cause gamers to overlook the classic multiplayer or zombies modes. Zombies is still in the midst of an Easter Egg hunt, as players try to unlock all of the secrets within each map. Thus far, two of the maps have been decoded, but the other is not yet solved.
As far as the multiplayer is concerned, Black Ops 4 offers the first modern/futuristic boots-on-the-ground shooter in the franchise since Call of Duty: Ghosts. Make sure to read our review for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 for more thoughts on the latest entry.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
