Huawei sub-brand Honor has unleashed its flagship smartphone, the Magic 2, at an event in China today. The slider phone that the company teased a couple of months back at IFA 2018 event comes with an edge-to-edge display on the front. Moreover, the display of the phone slides up to reveal the front camera and the 3D facial recognition module. The Magic 2 also comes with the latest 7nm HiSilicon chipset, triple rear camera setup, and the company’s digital voice assistant YoYo. The company also launched the Honor Waterplay 8 tablet and Honor Magic 2 smartwatch at the same event.
Honor Magic 2 smartphone flaunts a 6.39-inch AMOLED display that bears a resolution of full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080p) and a screen-to-body ratio of 91.5 percent. Under the hood, the phone rocks world’s first 7nm HiSilicon 980 chipset paired with 6GB/ 8GB of RAM and 128GB/ 256GB expandable storage. The phonemaker is also shipping the phone with 8 gigs of RAM and 512GB storage option. Further, the device comes with a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to process all the AI-related activities, including the voice recognition and Google Lens-like object recognition feature.
In optics, the Magic 2 employs a 16MP colour lens as the primary sensor and a 24MP monochrome secondary sensor. There’s a third 16MP sensor on the phone as well that does duty for wide angle shots. The camera setup is backed by LED flash and Honor’s AI Vision technology to further enhance the results. They can also shoot videos at a 4K quality and a slow-mo video at 480fps. On the front, it gets a 16MP shooter mated with two 2MP sensors for selfies and video calling.
For security, the phone comes with a 3D facial recognition feature, which the company claims are more secure than the fingerprint sensor. Powering the Magic 2 is a 3,400mAh battery with 40W fast recognition technology. The company says that the tech can add 85 percent charge in just 30 minutes. The Magic 2 comes running Android 9 Pie-based EMUI out of the box. In terms of connectivity, it includes dual SIM 4G VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Type-C port, and AI GPS that provides 15-metre accuracy. Other features include a live transcription of your call and skin beauty detection in the camera app.
The Magic 2 price has been set at RMB 3,799 (~Rs 40,300) for the base 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM option. The middle variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB ROM will cost RMB 4,299 (~Rs 45,500), while the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model will set you back to RMB 4,799 (~Rs 51,000). The top-end 8GB RAM and 512GB ROM model fetches a sticker price of RMB 5,799 (~Rs 61,500). The handset comes in three shades: gradient black, gradient blue, and gradient red. It goes for sale in China from November 6th onwards with its pre-order starting today, except for the 512GB storage option.
