Shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk said Friday it will pause all container shipments through the Red Sea until further notice following a pair of attempted attacks on the Danish firm’s vessels and other maritime assaults by the Yemen-based Houthi rebel group against commercial shipping in the region over the last week.Key Facts
Maersk instructed all of its vessels in the Red Sea to pause their voyages through the Bab al-Mandab strait—which connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean—after a “near-miss incident” involving a Maersk Gibraltar vessel yesterday and “yet another attack on a container vessel” on Friday, the company said in a statement.
Maersk did not specify whether the ships would take another route, which could require vessels to travel around Africa from the west.
The company denied a claim by Houthi officials earlier on Friday that the rebel group had struck a vessel sailing toward Israel, according to Reuters, noting the vessel was not hit.
