«Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down,» Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, said on Wednesday.
NATO countries along the alliance’s eastern flank need a «drone wall», the European Union’s top defense official said on Wednesday, after Poland said it had intercepted Russian drones for the first time in more than three and a half years of full-scale war in Ukraine.
Andrius Kubilius, the European commissioner for defense and space, said «we must urgently develop» a «drone wall» across the «entire EU Eastern flank.»
Poland’s operational command said that early on Wednesday, they responded to an «unprecedented violation of Polish airspace» by Russian drones, calling it «a real threat to the safety of our citizens.»
Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, said «a huge number of Russian drones» entered the country’s airspace and those posing a «direct threat» were intercepted. Ukraine’s air force said in its own statement «at least eight» drones crossed from the country into Poland.
Tusk said was in «constant communication» with NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte.
Russia’s waves of airstrikes, particularly on sites close to NATO territory to the west of Ukraine, have frequently pushed the alliance to scramble fighter jets to protect Romanian and Polish airspace.
