Moms, like wildflowers, are diverse, colorful and sometimes a little thorny. If a dozen roses won’ t do for this Mother’s Day, consider these events and activities for your not-so-garden-variety mother.

Plan: OK, maybe she is a garden-variety mom — the tree-loving kind. In that case, bring her to the Mother’s Day Garden Party going on all weekend at the New York Botanical Garden. With an all-garden pass, the whole family can enjoy live music, garden-and-bird tours and yard games such as croquet and giant chess, plus access to much of the park’s grounds.
