A 58-year-old Modesto man was killed Monday evening when his car slammed head-on into another vehicle while zigzagging on a highway near Byron, officials said.
The crash occurred about 6: 30 p.m. on Byron Highway and sent three vehicles careening off the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses told CHP officers that the driver who was killed was in a Pontiac sedan that was heading south on Byron Highway at 60 mph and was weaving in and out of lanes, officials said. Near Bruns Road, the driver crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a Chevy Impala driven by a 45-year-old woman.
A 25-year-old man in a Toyota Camry driving behind the Impala swerved to avoid the crash and went off the roadway, smacking into a power pole and a concrete culvert, CHP officials said.
The driver of the Pontiac, whose name was not released, died at the scene. The woman in the Impala, who was only identified as a Brentwood resident, was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Toyota driver and his passenger were not injured in the crash, officials said.
Byron Highway was closed for about three hours as CHP officers investigated the wreck.
Anyone with information on the incident can contact the CHP’s Contra Costa County division at (925) 646-4980.
