Japanese authorities have created a new map of a remote island whose area has expanded through volcanic activity.
Japanese authorities have created a new map of a remote island whose area has expanded through volcanic activity.
In November 2013, volcanic activity started at Nishinoshima Island about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. Lava increased the size of the island.
Officials at the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan conducted on-site surveys from last October through December. Based on the surveys, the authority redrew the map of the island for the first time in 26 years.
