Clouds will start clearing around the time of the eclipse on Monday afternoon on the Treasure Coast, according to the National Weather Service, Melbourne.
Monday is to start off cloudy and then the skies are to gradually become sunny, according to the meteorologists.
The eclipse peaks at 2: 54 p.m. when the moon will block 84 percent of the sun on the Treasure Coast. Only a thin crescent of the sun will be visible around that time.
That’s when meteorologists expect some clearing in the clouds that could get in the way of viewing the rare celestial event, scientists said. A total eclipse of the sun is not expected in Florida until Aug.12,2045.
The peak of the eclipse is one moment in an event lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes, from 1: 23 p.m. to 4: 17 p.m, according to researchers. Before and after the peak, smaller portions of the sun will be blocked as the moon moves through the sun’s path. The sun and moon just being converging at 1: 23 p.m.
The eclipse won’t turn day to night here.
Here, “if you didn’ t know it was going on, you wouldn’ t notice, ” said Jon Bell, director of the Hallstrom Planetarium in Fort Pierce.
Monday’s partial eclipse won’t “noticeably darken the sky, ” he said. Darkening “doesn’t occur until over 95 percent of the sun is covered and (an eclipse) really starts to get your attention around 98 percent.”
Those who do look up are strongly cautioned to use protective glasses specifically designed for viewing the sun. Local stores sold out last week, according to store officials.
One alternative is using a kitchen colander to project small images of the eclipse on the ground or flat surface, Bell said. Light that passes through each hole shows an image on the ground.
