The edgy new song and its accompanying music video are setting high marks on VEVO and Spotify
Taylor Swift’s edgy new song “Look What You Made Me Do” and its accompanying music video are already obliterating records.
The single — which Swift released late Thursday night — racked up a whopping 10.129 million streams during its first 24 hours on Spotify, setting not just the record for the most day-one streams on the service, but the overall record for any song in a single day.
That eye-popping total blew past the previous day-one record set this January by Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You, ” which earned 7.9 million streams after its release. It also narrowly edged the overall single-day record on Spotify, which was also held by “Shape of You” with 10.123 streams one day this past March
Swift is making similar history with the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video, which premiered on Sunday evening at the MTV Video Music Awards. It’s estimated to finish the day with over 30 million views on Vevo, which would eclipse the single-day record of 27.7 million views set in October 2015 by Adele’s “Hello.”

To establish that record, Adele had passed Swift’s “Bad Blood, ” which earned 20.1 million views during its best 24-hour stretch.
The much-analyzed video for “Look What You Made Me Do” is particularly intriguing considering it features a bevy of subtle references to Swift’s past feuds and personal life drama.
For example, a scene in which Swift’s luxuriating in a bathtub filled with jewelry shows a single dollar bill floating on top — a reference to the symbolic $1 she earned after winning a court case earlier this month against a radio DJ she accused of groping her at a 2013 meet-and-greet.
A scene in a graveyard, meanwhile, shows a tombstone featuring the name Nils Sjoberg, which was the pseudonym she used to write her then-boyfriend Calvin Harris’ song “This Is What You Came For.” Chaos ensued when she revealed she wrote the song after they broke up last year.

Swift also sits on a throne with the Latin phrase “Et tu Brute” from William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” carved into the side. That translates to “You too, Brutus?” which refers to Brutus’ betrayal of Caesar — and could allude to any number of Swift foes, such as Katy Perry, Kanye West or Kim Kardashian.
