Did you know ArtPrize includes a film festival? Get a sneak peek at the 13 “ArtPrize On Screen” films showing Sept. 20-23.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – If you’ve attended ArtPrize, you’re probably aware of the photography, painting, sculpture, installation and performance art included in the enormous public art competition.
But did you know there is also a film festival, called ArtPrize On Screen?
Running from Sept. 20 to Sept. 23, “ArtPrize On Screen” features six documentary films and seven Michigan-made short films curated by the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts’ Open Projector Night series. One of the six documentaries is “Human Flow,” which is directed by acclaimed Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei.
The film festival launches on the same day as ArtPrize itself, which runs from Sept. 20 through Oct. 8. Public voting begins at noon Wednesday, Sept. 20.
Screening tickets are free, but reservations are recommended for seats in the theater. Tickets can be reserved through Celebration! Cinema’s website. Lines may form outside the venue 45 minutes before showtime and, 15 minutes prior to showtime, any unfilled seats will be released to those waiting in line.
All 13 films in ArtPrize On Screen are eligible for the ArtPrize Nine public vote in the time-based category, and the short films and documentaries are also eligible for separate independent awards sponsored by the Michigan Film and Digital Media Office and Celebration! Cinema.
Get a sneak peek at the films showing this year. This first screening will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, and the last at 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. All screenings will be held at the Ladies Literary Club, 61 Sheldon Blvd. SE.
