Nintendo’s latest foray into mobile gaming has made its way onto a lot of devices in its first week available.
This new mobile take on the Animal Crossing series, which lets the player run a campsite that will be used by numerous characters that fans know and love, has enjoyed a good first week. The game, which launched last Tuesday, had been anticipated for a while – Animal Crossing, out of all of Nintendo’s properties, has always felt particularly well suited to handheld and mobile devices, and the idea of being able to take it with you on a device that’s in your pocket at all time anyway is very appealing.
The game has faced some launch issues, and reviews have suggested that its structure is overly focused on herding players towards microtransactions, but that has not stopped it from being successful.
According to Sensortower, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp has been downloaded onto 15 million devices within its first week available. In terms of revenue, it’s lagging a bit – as of this report, it’s ranked 10th in Japan and 72nd in the US, which means that a lot of people who have installed are either not playing it much, or have simply not been spending money within the app.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is Nintendo’s fourth mobile offering, after Miitomo, Super Mario Run, and Fire Emblem Heroes (the Pokemon games on mobile were not developed internally). In its first week, Animal Crossing has been downloaded half as often as Super Mario Run was (32 million), but twice as many times as Fire Emblem (7 million).
It’ll be interesting to see how the game fares over time – and what Animal Crossing will look like when it inevitably comes to Switch.
