Eve Online developer CCP got out of the VR business in October. This meant the closure of its Newcastle studio, which had created the Eve spinoff title Valkryie for VR. The studio now has a new owner.
Icelandic game company CCP dropped out of the VR business in late October, which meant the closure of its Atlanta studio and the need to sell it’s Newcastle, U. K. office, the one responsible for EVE Online VR spinoff EVE Valkyrie. However, the new year brings good news for Newcastle, courtesy of developer Sumo Digital.
Sumo, which has worked on such titles as Crackdown 3, Hitman, and LittleBigPlanet 3, will pick up all 34 employees from the Newcastle studio as part of the deal with CCP. Newcastle joins Sumo’s other teams in Sheffield and Nottingham, U. K., and Pune, India.
“As we continue to expand this was a great opportunity to bring an experienced, talented and tight-knit team on board,” Sumo Managing Director Paul Porter said in a statement .
Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games, was happy to see the team get a new home. ”Sumo Digital is a great home for the team in Newcastle. As we say goodbye to our former colleagues we know that they will do great things there, and we can’t wait to see what they do next,” he said in a statement.
Sumo offered no indication of what the Newcastle team’s first project would be, but said that studio director Owen O’Brien would remain in charge.
