The Giants’ beefing up of James Bettcher’s linebacking corps has begun.
The Daily News has confirmed that the Giants have acquired Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree and the Rams’ seventh-round pick in a trade that sent the Giants’ compensatory fourth-round pick and their original sixth-round pick back to L.A.
The Giants, therefore, who own the second pick in each round, protected their original fourth-round pick, the 102nd overall pick and second of the fourth-round. And they surrendered instead the fourth round’s 35th pick, and the draft’s 135th overall, a compensatory pick they’d been awarded based on free agents lost and gained last offseason.
Ogletree, 26, entering his sixth NFL season out of Georgia, improves a thin Giants linebacking corps that needs to add speed, athleticism and versatility in Bettcher’s new 3-4, blitz-heavy scheme.
