PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will soon be testing a map selection feature for the PC version of the game that will let players pick between Erangel and Miramar.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a constantly evolving experience, with the team making a number of changes to the game based on fan feedback. One feature fans have been wanting for months is the ability to choose their own maps, and now PUBG Corp is finally adding map selection to the test servers, with plans to roll it out to the actual game soon.
The decision to add map selection to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds comes after fan complaints about the Miramar desert map. A number of fans dislike Miramar compared to Erangel, the original PUBG map, and want the option to skip it. The map selection feature will allow them to do just that, as players will be able to select whatever maps they want in their rotation.
PUBG Corp has some worry that allowing players to do this may have a negative impact on the game as it could segment the community. Considering this, the team will be monitoring the map selection feature closely.
One potential roadblock for the map selection feature in PUBG is when more maps are added to the game in the future, which could potentially split the community even more. We already know of at least one new map in the works, the small-scale Savage map, and if it proves popular enough, it could potentially lower the population of both Erangel and Miramar.
Speaking of Miramar, if the vocal fans who dislike the map represent the majority of players, it’s easy to see how its population could be reduced to practically nothing. After all, the Miramar desert map has been heavily criticized since it launched in the PC version of the game late last year, to the point that some players managed to remove it from map rotation by modifying their game files.
PUBG Corp’s worry that map selection could have a negative impact on the population for certain maps seems reasonable, and it will be interesting to see just how much map populations are impacted once the feature goes live. If it turns out that map selection isn’t well-received by the community, PUBG Corp could remove it or modify it in the future, so fans should keep that in mind.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now on Android, iOS, PC, and through early access on Xbox One.
