President Trump on Friday said the nation was still mourning the students and staffers killed in the mass shooting at a high school in Florida — and repeated his argument that teachers or other school staffers should be armed to thwart such attacks.
“Our entire nation was filled with shock and grief by the monstrous attack on a high school in Parkland, Florida. We mourn for the victims and their families. Our heart breaks for every American that has suffered the horrors of the school shootings,” the president said at the NRA convention in Dallas, Texas.
“In the aftermath I met with the parents, the survivors of the shootings. I was inspired by all of them. We agreed we needed to ensure that we actually make a difference and my administration has pursued an aggressive strategy on community safety.”
He said school security needed to be improved and that his administration had dedicated $2 billion to improving school security in the nation’s schools.
“We’re working to improve early warning systems so that when the police are called, when the community sees the red flags, which they saw in Parkland all over the place, there has never been a case where more red flags have been shown, swift action is taken by the authorities,” he said.
And he repeated his calls for more armed security guards and arming teachers .
“We strongly believe in highly trained teachers carrying concealed weapons. They’re highly trained, and we want highly trained security guards. Ninety-eight percent of mass public shootings have occurred in places where guns are banned, just so you understand,” he contended.
“Gun-free schools,” he added are an open invitation to crazed killers.
Seventeen people were killed by a former student in the Valentine’s Day shooting at the high school, an atrocity that sparked students there and across the US to organize to call for stricter gun control laws.
