Christina Ricci Takes a Veiled Shot at Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ Cringeworthy Support of Convicted Rapist Danny Masterson: “Believe Victims”

0

Christina Ricci showed support to the victims who accused Danny Masterson of rape.
Christina Ricci spoke out in support of Danny Masterson‘s victims after it was revealed that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis had written letters in support of Masterson during his rape trial.
“Sometimes people we have loved and admired do horrible things,” she wrote in a post shared on her Instagram story on Saturday (Sep. 9), per People. “They might not do these things to us and we only know who they were to us but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do horrible things and to discredit the abused is a crime.”
Ricci’s message to her fans got even more personal as she wrote, “Unfortunately I’ve known lots of ‘awesome guys’ who were lovely to me who have been proven to be abusers privately. I’ve also had personal experience with this.”
The Yellowjackets actor concluded her post by writing, “Believe victims. It’s not easy to come forward. It’s not easy to get a conviction.”
Ricci’s social media post comes after news broke that Kutcher and Kunis wrote letters vouching for Masterson’s “exceptional character” ahead of his sentencing last week, when the That ’70s Show actor was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on two counts of forcible rape.
Despite their involvement in the case, Kunis maintained that they still “support victims” in the public apology she and her husband issued this past weekend.
“They were intended for the judge to read and not to undermine the testimony of the victims or re-traumatize them in any way,” Kutcher said. “We would never want to do that. And we’re sorry if that has taken place.”
Masterson was initially charged with raping three women between 2001 and 2003, during which he was still starring alongside Kutcher and Kunis on ABC’s hit sitcom. His first trial ended in a mistrial before he was convicted on two of the three charges in May of this year.
After Masterson was accused of raping four women, his case was inexplicably delayed in 2017 despite authorities having “overwhelming evidence,” which Leah Remini claimed was because of his and the LAPD’s ties to the Church of Scientology.
Both of Masterson’s victims provided statements during his recent sentencing.
One Jane Doe said Masterson “has not shown an ounce of remorse for the pain he caused,” adding, “I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with. I am so sorry, and I’m so upset. I wish I’d reported him sooner to the police.”

DraftKings apologizes for 9/11 sports be promo

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Sports betting company DraftKings apologized Monday after using the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to entice people to bet on baseball and football games on the anniversary of the tragedy that killed nearly 3,000 people. — Sports betting company DraftKings apologized Monday after using the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to entice people to bet on baseball and football games on the anniversary of the tragedy that killed nearly 3,000 people.
The Boston-based company offered users a 9/11-themed promotion that required three New York-based teams — the Yankees, Mets and Jets — to win their games Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the downing of a passenger jet in a field in Pennsylvania.
After an outcry on social media from people offended by the promotion titled “Never Forget,” DraftKings took it down and apologized.
“We sincerely apologize for the featured parlay that was shared briefly in commemoration of 9/11,” the company wrote. “We respect the significance of this day for our country and especially for the families of those who were directly affected.”
Brett Eagleson, whose father, Bruce, was killed in the World Trade Center, runs a families and first responders organization called 9/11 Justice. He decried the DraftKings offer as “tone-deaf.”
“It is shameful to use the national tragedy of 9/11 to promote a business,” he said. “We need accountability, justice and closure, not self-interest and shameless promotion.”
The company would not say how many people placed bets as a result of the offer, nor whether those bets remain valid or whether they have been canceled.
DraftKings is one of the leading companies offering legal sports betting in the U.S., which has grown rapidly since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for it in 2018. Two-thirds of the country now offers it.
Bets of the type DraftKings offered, in which multiple games or outcomes are bundled into a single wager, are extremely profitable for sports books, and offering gamblers preselected groupings, called parlays, is an important part of sports wagering.
The bet promoted by DraftKings included three New York teams as well as the Red Sox.  The New York Jets play the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, while the New York Yankees face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway, and the Mets face the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citi Field.

Nintendo Controller Patent Could Solve Annoying Joy-Con Drift Issue For The Switch 2

0

A new patent filing from Nintendo points to at least one notable upgrade to the next Nintendo console.
It’s been more than six years since Nintendo launched the Switch, its first hybrid handheld console. It’s due for an upgrade, and the rumored Switch Pro probably isn’t happening. Instead, rumors of a true Switch successor have begun popping up online. A new patent filing from Nintendo points to at least one notable upgrade to the next Nintendo console. The document describes a new controller that would do away with Joy-Con drift once and for all.
Switch owners have been plagued by Joy-Con drift since early in the system’s life. After being used for a bit, Nintendo’s controller thumbsticks have a tendency to wear down in such a way that they report movement when you’re not even touching them. The only way to fix this drift is to replace the component or buy a new Joy-Con. Nintendo has been sued over the defect a few times, which resulted in a free repair program that Nintendo usually honors.
The issue is not unique to Nintendo hardware—other controllers have shown similar tendencies to drift after extended use. However, some Switch variants don’t even have removable controllers, and Nintendo didn’t address drift across all the Switch hardware refreshes. There’s reason to hope for a fix in the Switch 2, which will probably have a better name at launch. While the original Switch and all its variants uses a standard contact potentiometer to measure thumbstick movement, the patent (PDF) previews a move to Hall effect sensors. There are numerous drift fix kits and third-party controllers for the Switch that promise to solve the problem, and they usually rely on Hall effect sensors. A potentiometer like we have in the current Switch controllers can wear down at the contact points, and Nintendo’s hardware seems particularly vulnerable, but Hall effect sensors are magnetic and don’t make physical contact. So, there’s no wear and no drift no matter how long you play.
The patent was filed with the USPTO in May of this year and was published just last week. It’s likely at this stage that new Nintendo hardware patents are related to its next console. Nintendo reportedly demoed the Switch 2 at Gamescom for a select group of developer partners. The console allegedly ran an enhanced version of Breath of the Wild, as well as the Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo. In most corners of the internet, gamers are expecting to see a new Switch in the second half of 2024. If the Switch 2 really can rival the graphical performance of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, people are going to put a lot of miles on those revamped thumbsticks.

Drew Barrymore criticized over talk show return as WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike continues

Drew Barrymore is in hot water after she announced the return of her daytime talk show amid the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.
Drew Barrymore is in hot water after she announced the return of her daytime talk show amid the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.
On Sunday, the 48-year-old actress-turned-host made the announcement on Instagram and explained her choice.
First, she explained why she backed out of hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards this summer.
“I made a choice to walk away from the MTV, film and television awards because I was the host and it had a direct conflict with what the strike was dealing with which was studios, streamers, film, and television,” she wrote.
“It was also in the first week of the strike and so I did what I thought was the appropriate thing at the time to stand in solidarity with the writers. And to be clear, our talk show actually wrapped on April 20th so we never had to shut down the show,” she continued, speaking of “The Drew Barrymore Show.” “However, I am also making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me.”
“I own this choice,” she further explained. “We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real-time. I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience.”
She finished by saying she hoped for a resolution the strikes, and said she’d be starting the talk show’s fourth season with “astute humility.”
After making the announcement, Barrymore received immediate backlash in the post’s comments.
Actress Elizabeth Ho wrote, “I have always looked to you as someone in the industry (who) listens to others with respect, empathy, and kindness. And I am deeply saddened and disappointed to see that you have abandoned those qualities to put your name and your brand first. I hope you reconsider. United we stand, divided we beg.”
Comic and personality Loni Love chimed in, saying, “WGA is planning to strike your show Monday. Don’t understand (why) all talk shows are under a different tv contract.. also this infighting is what the AMTMP wants us to do… The fight is with studios not each other.”
WGA writers picketed in front of the show’s studios in New York City on Monday.
“The Drew Barrymore Show is a WGA-covered, struck show that is planning to return without its writers. The Guild has and will continue to, picket-struck shows that are in production during the strike. Any writing on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ is in violation of WGA strike rules,” WGA posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The “Never Been Kissed” star did receive some praise from fans, as well. “In my opinion, your show is really important to a lot of people and I think it’s great that you’re finding a way to come back,” wrote one commenter.
Barrymore’s show is filmed in New York City and debuted in 2020.

Treffen von Putin und Kim Jong-un bestätigt

0

DraftKings apologizes for 9/11 sports bet promo on New York teams

0

The 9/11 terror attacks killed nearly 3,000 Americans, most in New York. DraftKings offered gamblers a parlay bet on New York teams winning on the anniversary.
Sports gambling giant DraftKings apologized Monday for a bet parlay offer that would have paid out if three New York teams won on the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks that killed almost 3,000 Americans.
The vast majority of 9/11 deaths occurred in the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in lower Manhattan, and aboard the two commercial airline jets that struck and destroyed them.
“We sincerely apologize for the featured parlay that was shared briefly in commemoration of 9/11,” DraftKings said on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
“We respect the significance of this day for our country and especially for the families of those who were directly affected,” the company said.
The parlay would have paid out if the New York Yankees, Mets and Jets won Monday.
The offer elicited fierce criticism on social media before it was yanked by the company.
“Absolute clowns,” one X user wrote in reply to DraftKing’s apologetic tweet.
“Shameful,” another user wrote.
“No, you do not respect the significance of the day, nor do you respect the human beings who bet on sports with you,” read another post.
Bret Eagleson, whose father, Bruce, was killed at the Trade Center told The Associated Press, “It is shameful to use the national tragedy of 9/11 to promote a business.
“We need accountability, justice and closure, not self-interest and shameless promotion,” said Eagelson, who operates a group called 9/11 Justice.
Ten years ago, AT&T deleted a tweet that featured a hand holding a mobile phone capturing an image of the Tributes in Light, which are two beams of light projected up from lower Manhattan showing where the Twin Towers once stood. The tweet said, “Never Forget.”
“We apologize to anyone who felt our post was in poor taste,” AT&T said in a subsequent tweet. “The image was solely meant to pay respect to those affected by the 9/11 tragedy.”

FDA greenlights updated mRNA Covid vaccines

0

The agency’s decision on Monday sets up shots to be rolled out later this month.
The FDA on Monday cleared two updated mRNA Covid-19 shots from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax, paving the way for an early fall rollout. It will be the first updated shots offered to the public in a year and since the public health emergency ended in May.
The new shots target the XBB.1.5 subvariant of Omicron, following the FDA’s June recommendation. Both companies said their shots generate substantial antibodies against the XBB subvariants of the virus, as well as the newer EG.5 and FL.1.5.1 subvariants, which now make up more than 30 percent of cases in the U.S.
Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna said their updated shots provide additional neutralizing antibodies against BA.2.86, a variant the World Health Organization is monitoring because the variant’s high number of mutations could mean it can evade existing immunity. The variant was first detected in Denmark in July and in the U.S. in August.
Novavax asked the FDA to authorize its updated shot earlier this summer, but has not yet received a decision from the FDA. The company has received shipments of the vaccine in the U.S. If it receives authorization, it will be the only non-mRNA vaccine option available.
What’s next: The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet on Tuesday to discuss endorsing and deciding who should receive the updated shots. The panel will also hear from all three vaccine manufacturers, as well as updates on current Covid spread and data on vaccine effectiveness.
Once the agency’s director, Dr. Mandy Cohen, signs off on ACIP’s recommendations, the shots have a clear path to reach the public. Makers of all three shots have said they’re prepared to deliver shots in the coming weeks.
