Telegram.

Lawmakers call to remove Charlie Kirk assassination videos

0

Lawmakers pressure social media companies to remove Charlie Kirk assassination footage as platforms struggle with content moderation of graphic violence.
When conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a speaking event at Utah Valley University, videos of the attack spread almost instantly across social media. Within minutes, graphic clips appeared on TikTok, X, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
Lawmakers quickly demanded that the platforms take action. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) publicly called on Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and TikTok to remove the footage. Luna wrote on X, “He has a family, young children, and no one should be forced to relive this tragedy online.” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) echoed the plea, saying, “I agree completely! I NEVER want to see that again!! I hate that I saw it at all.”
That outrage quickly shifted the spotlight to the platforms themselves, with TikTok, Meta and YouTube outlining their responses while X remained largely silent.TikTok responds with removals and safeguards
TikTok confirmed it is removing videos of Charlie Kirk’s assassination and outlined the steps it is taking to prevent harmful clips from spreading further. The company also issued a statement to CyberGuy expressing condolences to Kirk’s family. A TikTok spokesperson said, “We are saddened by the assassination of Charlie Kirk and send our deepest condolences to his wife Erika, their two young children and their family and friends. These horrific, violent acts have no place in our society. We remain committed to proactively enforcing our Community Guidelines and have implemented additional safeguards to prevent people from unexpectedly viewing footage that violates our rules.”
Beyond the statement, TikTok pointed to its broader Community Guidelines. The platform explained that all content is first reviewed by automated moderation tools before it appears in feeds. This system helps catch large volumes of content that may violate rules or require age restrictions.
TikTok prohibits gory, gruesome or extremely violent clips. The company also restricts content showing human or animal blood, extreme fighting or graphic footage. When footage may be in the public interest, TikTok applies safeguards like age restrictions, warning screens, or “opt-in” labels. These measures are designed to reduce exposure, especially for younger users.
TikTok said that teen accounts cannot access graphic or potentially distressing content, even when the videos are tied to major news events. Clips flagged under this rule are blocked from the “For You” feed and cannot be recommended to underage users.
TikTok also emphasized that it removes posts that harass victims or degrade people involved in tragedies. Statements that belittle or deny an experience, such as claiming a victim “deserved it”, are banned. The platform also prohibits violent threats, incitement to violence or promotion of criminal activity.Meta removes glorifying content and restricts Charlie Kirk shooting videos to 18+
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads, confirmed that its Violent and Graphic Content policies apply to the footage of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. In a statement to CyberGuy, a Meta spokesperson said,
“We are removing content that glorifies or supports this tragic incident or the perpetrator, while applying warning screens over videos of the incident and restricting their view to people 18 and over.”
All clips of the shooting are now flagged with a “Mark as Sensitive” warning label. These videos are age-gated to 18 and older and cannot appear in the feeds of underage accounts.
Meta’s approach includes warning screens, sensitivity filters and age restrictions. When users encounter sensitive videos, they must opt in before they can view the footage. This system is designed to protect people from unexpectedly seeing graphic imagery.
In this case, the videos are permitted under a public interest exception, but only with restrictions.YouTube restricts Charlie Kirk shooting videos and elevates news sources
YouTube confirmed it is removing graphic videos of Charlie Kirk’s assassination while also boosting authoritative news coverage of the tragedy. The company said in a statement, “Our hearts are with Charlie Kirk’s family following his tragic death. We are closely monitoring our platform and prominently elevating news content on the homepage, in search and in recommendations to help people stay informed.”
YouTube explained that it is removing highly graphic videos of the attack, especially those that lack sufficient context for viewers. Clips that remain online may be age-restricted, meaning they are not viewable to anyone signed out or under 18. Some of these videos also include an interstitial warning screen, which requires users to click “Continue” before the footage plays.
The company added that it will continue to monitor the platform and may remove additional content that violates its Community Guidelines. YouTube’s policies specifically prohibit content that revels in or mocks the death or serious injury of an identifiable individual.X faces criticism over Charlie Kirk shooting video policies
On X, formerly Twitter, videos of the shooting remain available as long as they follow the platform’s graphic media policy. X requires that such clips be labeled appropriately, not prominently displayed and not “excessively gory.”
However, users reported seeing the footage in their feeds without consent. Some said the autoplay feature exposed them to the videos before they could turn it off. Researchers also noted that clips were quickly reposted and continued to spread across the platform.
X allows users to share graphic media if it is properly tagged. The platform bans content that glorifies violence, incites harm or celebrates attacks. Still, videos may remain online if they are considered newsworthy or tied to current events.
The platform warns users that content labeled “sensitive” should not be displayed automatically. But in practice, researchers observed the Kirk video surfacing through algorithmic feeds, even when people had not searched for it.
X did not respond to our request for comment before publication.Social media gatekeeping fails with Charlie Kirk shooting video
For decades, news organizations made editorial decisions about whether to publish violent imagery, often avoiding explicit content to protect audiences. Today, that gatekeeping power has diminished.
Smartphones and instant uploads mean graphic events can spread before any newsroom responds. Social media algorithms often amplify the most shocking clips, making it nearly impossible to shield viewers from disturbing footage.Lawmakers increase pressure on social media moderation
Luna and Boebert’s statements underscore growing political pressure on tech companies to better enforce content rules. Researchers also warn that unchecked circulation of graphic violence can desensitize viewers and, in some cases, encourage extremist responses.
At the same time, major platforms have scaled back human moderation teams, relying more on AI detection systems. Experts say those systems often miss context, leaving dangerous gaps in enforcement. Parent safety tips to protect kids from graphic videos
Parents worried about their children encountering violent clips can take proactive steps:
These steps won’t block everything, but they give families more control in a world where disturbing videos can spread fast.Kurt’s key takeaways
The calls to remove videos of Charlie Kirk’s death highlight the challenges of moderating violence online. Platforms promise safeguards, but in practice, graphic clips often spread faster than moderation systems can react. As social media continues to replace traditional gatekeepers, both companies and users share responsibility for what circulates online. Adjusting your settings and being cautious about sharing content can make a difference.

Why Are Gravity Knives Illegal In So Many US States?

0

A gravity knife is one with a retractable blade that uses inertia and a quick hand motion to deploy, but they’re banned across the United States.
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.
The knife is one of mankind’s oldest and most versatile tools, with origins that go back more than 2 million years. Metal blades appeared about 10,000 years ago, and various types of knives are now used for household tasks, to harvest and prepare food, perform surgery, and cut and shape building materials. Similar to how some states have strange laws regarding driving, regulations for knives vary as you travel around the United States. One notable exception are gravity knives, which are banned by federal law in the U.S. Unlike switchblade knives that use a spring system to release the blade with the push of a button or flick of a lever, gravity knives harness inertia to allow users to deploy the blade with one hand. Although they’re sub-categorized by opening style and blade type, many gravity knives can be deployed with just a flick of the wrist.
Gravity knives were banned by the Federal Switchblade Act of 1958, which prohibits knives that open “(1) by hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle of the knife, or (2) by operation of inertia, gravity, or both.” The New York City council passed a comprehensive weapons ban in 1909 that was expanded to include switchblades in 1933; an update to the law banned automatic folding knives even for work purposes in 1956. These laws were meant to protect people from violence involving knives, but violent crimes involving guns are now much more common. In 2023, 1,562 Americans were murdered using knives or similar tools; that same year more than 7,000 murders were committed using handguns. U.S. weapons law might be somewhat stuck in a long-ago era when criminals flashed switchblades instead of Glock pistols, but it’s important to know the law and follow it whenever you travel. How big of a knife can I carry?
Alongside the federal law, the majority of the United States have their own restrictions on the sale and use of automatic knives in terms of type, blade length, who can use them, and how they need to be carried. States where gravity knives have been explicitly prohibited include California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. In the Empire State, gravity knives may only be used by law enforcement or by people actively hunting, trapping, or fishing. These laws vary greatly from state to state, so it’s important to do your research before traveling to another part of the country.
You could face felony charges in some states, including California. There, fixed-blade knives must be carried in a sheath below the waist, and automatic knives with blades longer than two inches can’t be carried in public or a vehicle. If you have a Swiss Army Knife, it must be folded and concealed in a pocket or bag when you’re in California. Although laws vary widely from state to state, there are a few consistencies that can help you plan. Even in California, it’s legal to carry a folding (non-locking) knife with a blade that’s 2.5 inches long or less. We chose the Victorinox Compact model as the best Swiss Army Knife for everyday carrying, but its 3.6-inch blade makes it illegal in that state. In New York and Florida, folding knives that don’t fall under the switchblade or gravity knife classification can have blades with a maximum length of 4 inches, and Texas allows folding knife blades up to 5.5 inches long. It’s generally safe to carry small blades, but check local laws to make sure your knife and planned use of it are legal in the states you plan to visit.

Anti-Israel protests turn Spanish Vuelta cycling race into a diplomatic battleground

0

Protests targeting an Israeli-owned team have seized the limelight at Spain’s version of the Tour de France. The team under fire issued a statement saying that quitting the race is out of the question.
As an alderperson in northwestern Spain, Rosana Prieto tends to the running of her tiny village and is far removed from major cities, often rocked by protests over geopolitical issues. But with one of the world’s biggest cycling races coursing through the bucolic hills nearby, she and hundreds of like-minded townspeople sensed a chance to make their small voices heard, denouncing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Palestinian flags in hand, they stood precisely where they knew the television cameras would broadcast their message to the world: the last turn before the finish line of the 15th stage, as cyclists of the Spanish Vuelta whirred past. Further up the road, a protester carrying a Palestinian flag got too close to the speeding peloton and caused a pair of cyclists to crash.
Protests targeting an Israeli-owned team have repeatedly seized the limelight at the Vuelta, Spain’s version of the Tour de France, in which over 180 cyclists pedal 3,100 kilometers (1,900 miles) through rural Spain’s sleepy back-roads. Five of the last 10 days of racing have been either cut short or interrupted, with over 20 people detained by police.
Israel’s 23-month military grind into Palestinian territory, launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, deadly attack on Israel, had already enraged many Spaniards, including its outspoken left-wing government. The protests on the sidelines of the Vuelta have earned the government’s tacit endorsement and catalyzed nudging it toward staking out one of the strongest positions against Israel of any European nation since the sustained military operation began.
“The protests were born from the idea that our only chance to defend human rights regarding Israel is the Spanish Vuelta”, Prieto, 48, told The Associated Press by phone. “It is an international spotlight for us to say that we are against what Israel is doing.”
Israel has defended its military actions in Gaza and accused Spain of standing with Hamas.
The war has so far killed over 64,700 people in the Gaza Strip, according to the territory’s health ministry, as famine grips its largest city.Spain pressures for Israeli team’s exclusion
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez joined Ireland and Norway in recognizing a Palestinian state last year, and Spain became the first European country to ask a U.N. court for permission to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide.
The Vuelta protesters argue that if Russian teams have been banned from international sporting events for the war in Ukraine, then Israeli teams should likewise be punished.
Spain’s government agrees.
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said he would support the Israeli-owned team’s expulsion from the race, while government spokesperson Pilar Alegría, who is also minister of sports and education, said neutrality is no longer possible in the face of the death and destruction in Gaza.
“What we are seeing at the protests, in my opinion, is logical”, Alegría told Cadena Ser radio on Sept. 11. “Sports cannot be isolated from the world that surrounds them.”Protesters push race to the limit
For the Vuelta’s security detail, it was logistically impossible to lock down the entire route through its twisting roads, much of which is lined by forest. Large groups have gathered in towns and protesters have jumped out of cover to block the path of riders, causing two athletes to crash, although it’s unclear if that was the protesters’ intention. Neither of the riders who crashed was on the Israeli team. The cyclists participating in the race voted Wednesday that they would quit if their safety was again put at risk.
The team under fire, Israel Premier Tech — which only has one Israeli rider at the Vuelta — issued a statement saying that quitting the race is out of the question, as it would “set a dangerous precedent.”
But Israel Premier Tech has been endeavoring to keep a low profile. Riders have avoided speaking to the media and it took the step midrace of removing its team name from its riding uniforms.
The team is owned by Israeli-Canadian businessman Sylvan Adams, who emigrated to Israel in 2016, and has played a key role in promoting Israel via sports. He helped arrange Israel’s hosting of the start of Giro d’Italia, cycling’s third Grand Tour race, in 2018.
“Great job to Sylvan and Israel’s cycling team for not giving in to hate and intimidation”, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted to social media platform X on Sept. 5. “You make Israel proud!”‘A little scared’
There have been occasional confrontations between police, security personnel, and protesters. Prieto said that she needed medical treatment for abrasions and knocks after a police officer dragged her across the ground. She said she and her cohorts behaved peacefully, and is waiting to see whether she faces charges.
Cycling teams have decried some protester actions. Joxean Fernández Matxin, the team boss of UAE Emirates, said that some of them hit riders with flag poles and tossed tacks in their path.
“Everyone has a right to protest, but it’s a shame that it has to happen here and in this way and that we can’t finish the race”, race leader Jonas Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France winner, said after Wednesday’s stage finish was shortened.
Reigning Tour champion Tadej Pogačar skipped the Vuelta. Yet cycling’s biggest star was worried that the protests could spread to other races.
“I think all the riders are a little scared of what could happen”, Pogačar told reporters in Quebec Thursday. “When we see what’s going on at the Vuelta, we talk about it and we think it could happen here or in other races between now and the end of the season.”
The next day, a few dozen protesters gathered in the Canadian city of Quebec during a one-day race Pogačar participated in.Diplomatic spat intensifies
As the protests disrupted the Vuelta, a fleet of activists’ ships loaded with humanitarian aid set sail from Barcelona, aiming to break Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Spain’s prime minister chose this week to denounce Israel’s operations in Gaza as “genocide” and make a nationally televised address announcing an arms embargo and blocking Israel-bound fuel deliveries from passing through Spanish ports.
The move inflamed a diplomatic dispute that resulted in the ban of ministers from both countries. Israeli leaders called the Spanish government’s actions “antisemitic” and a “blatant genocidal threat.”
If the protests gain strength, they could become a concern for Israel, which has long prided itself on its close relations with the European Union. The European Commission’s president this week called for suspending trade ties with Israel, and the Netherlands said it would boycott the popular Eurovision song contest next year if Israel is allowed to participate.
For analyst Oriol Bartomeus, professor of political science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Sánchez’s long campaign against Israel’s incursion in Gaza is both benefiting from and fueling the grassroots protest movement at the cycling race.
“What is happening at the Vuelta is a symptom of the anger of the left over this issue”, Bartomeus told the AP. “This is poised to be a major point of cohesion of Spanish society. Sánchez is not stupid, and he has gotten right in there.”
Protesters aim to take action again on Sunday, when the race concludes in Madrid. Authorities will deploy 1,500 police for the final stage, adding to the 130 officers already traveling with the race.

Polacy, liderzy światowego rankingu, trafili do grupy B, w której ich rywalami będą zespoły znacznie niżej notowane: Holandia (FIVB 19.), Katar (20.) i Rumunia (22.). Strata seta w spotkaniach z tymi zespołami będzie niespodzianką, natomiast utrata punktu – sensacją.

– Oczekuję, że rozbijemy ich wszystkich 3:0. Mówię poważnie. To jest podejście, którego chcę od zawodników. Rumunia nie gra w większości turniejów, więc nie znam jej mocnych stron. Nie znam ani jednego zawodnika grającego w Katarze. Naszym celem jest wyjście z grupy z dziewięcioma punktami. Faza grupowa ma nam posłużyć jako przygotowanie do 1/8 finału i kolejnych etapów turnieju – powiedział trener Polaków Nikola Grbic.

Biało-Czerwoni to jeden z głównych faworytów turnieju w Manili.

Ostatni raz wicemistrzowie olimpijscy z Paryża grali z Rumunami w. 2014 roku. Przegrali z nimi wówczas 2:3, a następnie pokonali ich 3:1. Były to jednak zupełnie inne zespoły niż obecnie.

Początek spotkania zaplanowano na godz. 15.30 czasu polskiego.

Why Do Most European Semi-Trucks Have Flat Noses? (But American Trucks Don't)

0

European trucks use flat-nose cab-over designs to handle tighter roads and length limits, while U.S. trucks favor long hoods for space, comfort, and safety.
The sight of a semi-truck in your rear-view mirror is an imposing one for an American driver. That big, long hood is typically accented with a bold grille, sometimes clad in chrome, and the image is all too often finished off by a pair of shining stacks pointing up toward the sky. These don’t just look cool; semi-trucks have vertical exhaust stacks for a reason, but that’s another story – we’re more interested in the hoods of semi-trucks here, and specifically, why most European trucks don’t employ the same design.
European semi-trucks, or lorries as they are called in England, are typically flat-faced, like those found on a city bus or coach. This means they look entirely different from American semi-trucks, which is odd, as the two are still designed to excel at the exact same task. You’d think that one design would have proved superior throughout the years and would now prevail as the only option, but that’s seemingly not the case.
The reason European semi-trucks have flat noses is space. That’s a simple way of looking at it, but it pretty much sums it up. America is vast, and as such, space on the road is rarely an issue for those long-nosed semi-trucks we see so often. However, narrow roads, tighter parking spots, and restrictions on overall length in Europe mean that the flat-nosed, or cab-over, design makes more sense over there. As with anything, there are downsides and upsides to each of these styles, and they are well worth exploring. The flat-nosed design of European semi-trucks comes with both up and downsides
First of all, let’s be honest, American semi-trucks look cooler. They are symbols of America, whereas European trucks are far from that. Unfortunately, though, looking cool doesn’t cut it as a reason for Europe to adopt long-nosed trucks, so let’s explore some of the other benefits and negatives of both designs.
As already mentioned, a cab-over design is more friendly in terms of space. Navigating tight lanes and squeezing into busy car parks is all part and parcel of being a European truck driver, and in instances like this, the flat-face is a welcome design. However, it’s not so welcome in the event of an accident. Those long noses on American trucks act as a crumple zone, providing more protection for drivers when accidents do occur. The U.S. design also makes maintenance easier, with the engine accessible via a hood, rather than having to tilt the entire cab over.
We’ll revisit arguably the most important point to finish: having a shorter cab means there is more room for a longer trailer. This means more cargo can be carried — and European trucks actually boast a higher capability when it comes to pulling capacities too — and the more that can be carried, the more efficient the design is. This isn’t an issue in the U.S., but in Europe, where length restrictions are in place, every inch matters.
