So much for the “he criticized Democrats” narrative that formed around Cody Balmer. The arsonist targeted Josh Shapiro and his family over perceived slights to “the people of Palestine”, according to police search warrants, as well as Shapiro’s Jewish faith.
The timing of the attack — on Passover — strongly suggested domestic terrorism in the first place. Now police and prosecutors claim they have evidence to back up that assumption, as well as evidence of Balmer’s left-wing extremism . in the familiar form of Che Fever:
The suspected arsonist who allegedly tried to kill Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro decided to firebomb his official residence because of “what he wants to do to the Palestinian people”, according to a search warrant signed by Pennsylvania State Police.
Investigators obtained several warrants as part of the investigation into the early Sunday morning arson attack, including for suspect Cody Balmer’s storage unit, electronic devices and parents’ home, where he told a Dauphin County judge he had recently been living.
Balmer, 38, targeted Shapiro “based upon perceived injustices to the people of Palestine”, one of the warrants said, law enforcement sources .
What is their evidence? Apparently, it comes from Balmer himself, who called 911 after the attack on the governor’s mansion:
Cody Balmer, the man accused of setting fire to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence, allegedly told 911 operators he targeted the governor in part because of his views on the war in Gaza, according to a search warrant obtained by news site PennLive.
The warrant said Balmer called 911 early Sunday morning after the fire at the governor’s residence, and said Shapiro needs to know he “will not take part in his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people,” according to the PennLive report. .
According to the PennLive report, Balmer also told 911 operators Shapiro needed to “stop having my friends killed,” and that “our people have been put through too much by that monster,” the warrant said.
The warrant notes Balmer’s “intonation and cadence” sounded like his was “possibly reading from a script,” according to PennLive.
A script? That could suggest coordination with others, although it could also just show that Balmer had planned it thoroughly enough to have a statement pre-written for the attack. You can bet that the state police in Pennsylvania and the FBI will pursue both possibilities in their investigation.
That explains why prosecutors called it a “hate crime” yesterday. They didn’t reveal why, but the Dauphin County DA’s office made it clear they would proceed on that basis:
The district attorney of Dauphin County said a search warrant connected to Sunday’s arson attack on the Governor’s Residence was a possible hate crime.
District Attorney Fran Chardo said, “We will use the statement [by Balmer] regarding Palestine as evidence the defendant targeted the Governor because he is Jewish. We allege that this was a hate crime. Of course, the defendant is presumed to be innocent.”
Authorities said Cody Balmer harbored a hatred for Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
“A hatred” on an individual basis does not trigger hate-crime prosecutions. The hatred has to be group-based, as in a hatred for Jews. The Passover timing strongly suggested this anyway, as I wrote above, but police knew on Sunday that this was a “hate crime” by a radical Palestinian sympathizer.
In fact, that makes this more than a hate crime. It makes this into an act of domestic terrorism — political violence intended to subvert public policy and democratic governance. The state of Pennsylvania may or may not have a statute to charge domestic terrorism, but the federal government certainly does. The Department of Justice can bring that charge separately and in parallel to whatever prosecution that Dauphin County DAs conduct against Balmer, and they should. Double jeopardy does not apply, under the separate sovereigns doctrine, and the necessity to discourage such violence and terrorism demand full prosecution to the greatest extent of the law.
As for the Protection Racket Media, they continue to play the “we may never know” game about Balmer’s leftist political views. The word is already out on social media among the “Journolist” set that Balmer is just an apolitical nutcase, despite his de rigueur fandom of Che:

It’s sturdy, feels good in hand, has an excellent directional pad, and features impressive motion sensors and vibration tech. On top of that, the gamepad uses Bluetooth, so you don’t need an adapter to connect it to your PC. The Switch 2 is coming in the next few months with a new Switch 2 Pro Controller that features programmable rear buttons and a headphone jack, but if you want a good gamepad right now, the original Switch Pro Controller is still one of your best bets. Here’s how to connect it to your PC.
The Pro Controller appears to Windows as a DirectInput controller rather than an XInput controller like the Xbox Series X/S gamepad (or the fancier Xbox Elite Core Controller), so it can be a bit of a chore to get it working with your PC games. Fortunately, Valve added full Switch Pro Controller support to Steam, which probably covers a good chunk of your game library. Non-Steam games require additional steps that we’ll walk you through.

To ensure everything works as it should between the Pro Controller and your PC game, you should use Steam’s Big Picture mode, the couch-friendly lean-back menu system that works well with a gamepad.
If the Pro Controller is connected, the mouse cursor should disappear, and you should be able to navigate Big Picture with the gamepad. You can toggle “Use Nintendo Button Layout” depending on whether you prefer the A/B/X/Y buttons to be mapped as they are on the Pro Controller (clockwise X, A, B, Y from the top), or as they’re mapped on an Xbox controller (clockwise Y, B, A, X from the top).
When set up through Steam, the Pro Controller should work like an Xbox gamepad with any Steam game. You can toggle vibration on and off by clicking the controller under “Detected Controllers” in the same setup screen. If the analog sticks seem off, manually calibrate them by clicking Calibrate. You can also set how long the controller stays connected before disconnecting, so it goes to sleep.
Using Big Picture ensures that Steam’s controller support, over-the-game remapping, and configuration options appear as they should, which won’t likely be the case if you open a game from the desktop. With the game running through Big Picture mode, you should enter the Pro Controller’s controller options to bring up Steam’s Switch Pro Controller overlay. It lets you check the controller mappings for different situations and fix them when needed. You can manually map each input on the Pro Controller to any keystroke or gamepad input, but the default configuration should work for most games. This is helpful if any controls seem slightly off with the default settings; running in No Man’s Sky by clicking the right stick was finicky without manual corrections.Hardware Alternative: 8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter 2
Steam’s Pro Controller support is welcome, but you’re out of luck if you want to play non-Steam games with the controller because of how Windows detects it. You can fix this in one of two ways: using a hardware Bluetooth adapter specifically designed for multiple gamepad types or a software-based XInput wrapper.
The 8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter 2 is a $20 Bluetooth adapter that lets you easily connect the Switch Pro Controller, Switch Joy-Cons, or even the Wii U Pro Controller to your PC. This is the most powerful and most complicated option. Instead of relying on Steam or a USB adapter, you use a software wrapper to translate the Pro Controller’s inputs into a format that Windows 10 can better support.
X360ce is an open-source program that lets you control how Windows sees your non-XInput controller. It’s a robust wrapper that emulates an Xbox 360 gamepad by mapping nearly any other input to the gamepad’s inputs. The project is effectively complete and/or dead at this point; x360ce was last updated in 2020, but the program will work just fine even without ongoing development.
Betterjoy is another program for getting the Switch Pro Controller, as well as Joy-Cons, working as XInput devices. Its most recent release is from 2021.
Software wrappers should get the job done if you’re willing to tinker. It may take more than a bit of work; third-party driver wrappers are extremely finicky.What About Switch Joy-Con Controllers?
Joy-Cons are incredibly powerful and flexible on the Switch, but they’re awkward on the PC. The good news is that you can connect Joy-Cons to your PC by pairing them over Bluetooth like the Switch Pro Controller. The bad news is that each Joy-Con registers as its own controller, and getting two Joy-Cons to work together as one gamepad can be difficult. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database operated by nonprofit MITRE Corp will receive 11 months of federal support. A representative from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, whose parent agency funds the MITRE database, told Reuters that the department exercised an “option period on the contract to ensure there will be no lapse in critical CVE services.” The news was an eleventh-hour announcement, as federal funding for the project was slated to expire today.
This CVE database identifies and tracks cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and it is regularly used by IT professionals. It offers a standardized approach that allows complex and technical information about potential problems to be quickly shared across companies and organizations worldwide.
“We appreciate the overwhelming support for these programs that have been expressed by the global cyber community, industry, and government over the last 24 hours”, said Yosry Barsoum, vice president and director for MITRE’s Center for Securing the Homeland.

The Trump administration likely committed criminal contempt when it flew migrants to El Salvador despite a court ruling forbidding it, Judge James Boasberg ruled Wednesday, teeing up potential consequences for Trump officials and marking the first instance of a court finding the Trump administration defied its order.Key Facts

Boasberg ruled there’s “probable cause” the Trump administration acted in contempt of court by carrying out flights to El Salvador, writing the government “demonstrate[d] a willful disregard” for his ruling and though the judge gave officials “ample opportunity to rectify or explain their actions,” “none of their responses has been satisfactory.”

No officials will be punished immediately as a result of Boasberg’s Wednesday ruling, as the judge said he’s first giving the government a chance to “purge” its contempt—likely by returning the migrants it deported—before moving forward with identifying who was responsible for defying his order and referring them for prosecution, if the Trump administration still doesn’t comply.

Boasberg ruled Wednesday on the issue of whether the Trump administration intentionally violated his previous order on March 15 barring the government from deporting any migrants under President Donald Trump’s executive order that invoked the Alien Enemies Act, with Boasberg ruling—first verbally during a hearing, and then in a written order hours later—the White House could not temporarily deport anyone under that order while he continued considering the issue.

The Trump administration deported more than 200 migrants to El Salvador on March 15 despite Boasberg’s order, maintaining it did not violate the court ruling because the flights had already left before his written order was issued—and while they didn’t land until after the judge’s ruling came out, the government believed Boasberg lost authority over the flights once they left U.S. airspace.

While the Supreme Court later threw out Boasberg’s ruling and said the Trump administration can deport people under the Alien Enemies Act, Boasberg argued that doesn’t stop him from holding officials in contempt for defying his order while it was still in effect, writing, “It is a foundational legal precept that every judicial order ‘must be obeyed’ — no matter how ‘erroneous’ it ‘may be’ — until a court reverses it.”

The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment. Crucial Quote
“The Constitution does not tolerate willful disobedience of judicial orders — especially by officials of a coordinate branch who have sworn an oath to uphold it,” Boasberg wrote Wednesday. “To permit such officials to freely ‘annul the judgments of the courts of the United States’ would not just ‘destroy the rights acquired under those judgments’; it would make ‘a solemn mockery’ of ‘the constitution itself.’”Which Trump Officials Could Be Punished For Contempt?
It’s unclear. Attorneys for the Justice Department previously told Boasberg during a hearing they didn’t know who made the ultimate call that the flights should proceed to El Salvador on March 15 and not be turned around in response to the judge’s ruling. Since it’s unlikely Trump’s DOJ would agree to prosecute its own officials, federal law allows Boasberg to appoint an outside prosecutor to conduct the prosecution and move forward with the criminal charges.
