3 nations search for U. S. sailors missing after collision

USS John S. McCain sustained serious damage in crash with merchant ship off coast of Singapore; 10 sailors missing
BEIJING — The U. S. Navy said 10 sailors were still missing on Monday morning and five were injured after the USS John S. McCain warship collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Singapore.
The collision caused extensive damage to the U. S. ship’s hull, which resulted in flooding in several compartments, including the crew’s sleeping quarters. A search and rescue mission was underway for the missing sailors.
Following the incident, President Trump tweeted that his “thoughts and prayers are with our U. S. Navy sailors aboard” the U. S. warship.
CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports that the McCain docked in Singapore on Monday morning, arriving on its own power, as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash.
The McCain has a crew of more than 300 sailors and officers. It was heading to Singapore for what the Navy said was a routine port visit when the collision happened.
Video shot during the search and rescue operation shows a large hole in the rear port (left) side of the American ship. It extends below the water line, which caused parts of the guided missile destroyer to flood. Defense publication Jane’s said the hole appeared to be at least 10-feet in diameter.
The collision happened east of Singapore and the Straight of Malacca — one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The warship collided with a 30,000-ton oil and chemical tanker more than three times its size.
Retired Navy Captain Kevin Eyer told CBS News that ships like the tanker do have radar, and “other sophisticated systems which they can use to identify ships around them. But beyond a certain point, you have dozens of ships within, perhaps, a five-square-mile box, all milling about.”
The search and rescue operation involves ships and aircraft from the U. S., Malaysia and Singapore.
At least four U. S. sailors were evacuated by helicopter to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive.
This is the second collision involving a U. S. Navy ship in the Pacific in just the past two months. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship hit each other off the coast of Japan.
The captain of the Fitzgerald was relieved of his command and several other sailors are being punished for poor seamanship.
“My personal opinion is that it’s coincidental that these things happen, ” Eyer told CBS News. “The crews, the officers, the commanding officer, are all extremely well trained… this is the cost of having one of the world’s largest, most complex and sophisticated navies operating at sea 24/7 around the world.”
The USS McCain is named after Senator John Mcain’s grandfather and father, both of whom were Navy admirals.
The Arizona senator tweeted that he is keeping the sailors in the ship in his prayers, and that he appreciates the work of the search and rescue crews.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole latest news: release date, gameplay, trailer

0

The follow up to The Stick of Truth leaves fantasy and has the kids playing superheroes. We round up the latest news on South Park: The Fractured But Whole.
Warning! The trailer and content of South Park: The Fractured But Whole is rated 18. It contains humour and language some may find offensive.
The multi-platform follow up to 2014’s South Park: The Stick of Truth turns away from the fantasy theme and has the kids playing superheroes. We find out what the Coon and Friends will have to face in their next adventure in South Park: The Fractured But Whole and when you will be able to play it.
But it’s been delayed… again.
The game’s prequel, the Stick of Truth, was stuck in development lingo for a long time, and its legacy will always be the surprise that it ever saw the light of day.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole release date was announced for 6 December 2016, but in September it was confirmed that the game’s worldwide release had been delayed until at least Q2 2017.
Then Ubisoft said the game would be out by March 2017, but it was reported on 29 March that Xbox One and PS4 orders were being cancelled, and even refunded. This isn’t a good sign, and unfortunately could mean we have another long wait.
As of May 2017 Eurogamer reports it now will launch on 17 October, according to developer Ubisoft. This was confirmed at E3 2017, and the game should be set for Gamescom demos later this week.
Ubisoft confirmed in a May 2017 earnings call that The Fractured But Whole is one of four games it has due out before March 2018, though that still leaves a potentially long wait.
The platform situation for The Fractured But Whole is a standard affair: PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There will be standard editions and deluxe editions, which you can preorder a little further down the page, but it’ ll be frustrating to South Park fans who are still gaming on PS3 or Xbox 360.
Recommended specifications for PC include Windows 7/8/10 64-bit; an Intel Core i5-4690K/AMD FX-8350 or equivalent, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 670/750it/960/1060 or Radeon R9 280X/380/470 with 2GB VRAM.
Game is now taking preorders for South Park The Fractured But Whole for all platforms. We’ ve collected all the links for you below to make it easier! The deluxe editions for PS4 and Xbox One get you the entire Stick of Truth game for free, as well as a special costume and perk pack.
Be wary of pre-ordering though, considering the game has been delayed repeatedly.
Xbox One
South Park The Fractured But Whole: Regular Edition: £44.99 South Park The Fractured But Whole: Deluxe Edition: £54.99
PlayStation 4
South Park The Fractured But Whole: Regular Edition: £44.99 South Park The Fractured But Whole: Deluxe Edition: £54.99
PC
South Park The Fractured But Whole: Regular Edition: £44.99 South Park The Fractured But Whole: Gold Edition: £54.99
There’s also a Collector’s Edition being sold through Ubisoft for £79.99. See below for what you get with it, and click here to view the deal.
Ubisoft is ready to take you back on down to South Park to have yourself a time, reprising the role of aptly named The New Kid. We love the route the creators have taken by making you a new character, as it means you can interact with all your favourite diminutive crude folks from Stan to Kyle and Jimmy to Timmy. There is the choice of being male or female, but the characterisation pleasingly does not stop there.
Gameplay trailers debuted at E3 in June, and look to replicate the normal look and feel of episodes of the famous show. One trailer shows gameplay footage of The New Kid joining Cartman’s crime fighting gang where you can choose your backstory and type of superhero. We hope that this affects gameplay and outcomes of story, much like games such as the Telltale series or Until Dawn.
The story continues on from the end of the Stick of Truth, the last successful game in the series. The new game, which never looked likely to come to fruition until South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided that actually it’s a lot of fun.
The story is based around the Coon episodes of the long running American show, with Cartman taking centre stage in the gameplay as you try to become part of the kids’ superhero gang.
South Park regulars Kenny, Kyle and Stan are all along for the ride, with the boys splintering in the trailer to form two separate factions. It’s up to you as the new kid to become part of the group and help fight crime as darkness envelops the Colorado town.

Far Cry 5 latest news: release date, price, gameplay, platforms

0

Ubisoft has officially announced Far Cry 5. Here’s everything we know, including the latest news and rumours about the gameplay, release date, and platforms.
After the success of Far Cry 4 back in 2014, fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the almost inevitable Far Cry 5. It was a pretty big surprise when instead of the fifth game 2016 brought the stone age spin-off Far Cry: Primal, but another modern adventure is on the way.
We’ ll be tracking its development, and this page is where you’ ll find all the Far Cry 5 news and rumours out there, including its release date, platforms, and setting. The game will be demonstrated at Gamescom later this week, so we’re hoping to have new details for you soon.
If you want to find out about what else is on the way, check out our guide to this year’s most anticipated games.
After Far Cry 3 was released in November 2012 and Far Cry 4 came out in November 2014, fans obviously expected Far Cry 5 to arrive in November 2016. Publisher Ubisoft threw a surprise wrench in the works when they released Far Cry: Primal however, as the prehistoric spin-off game came out in February 2016, killing any hopes for the main series’ fifth game coming out in the same year.
That meant most fans expect Far Cry 5 to arrive some time in 2017. However, our dreams of a 2017 release were crushed by the Far Cry 5 reveal trailer which states that Far Cry 5 is set to be released on 27 February 2018.
You can pre-order the game now for £49.99/$59.99 from Amazon, though if you don’t mind spending a little more there’s the Gold Edition, which includes some exclusive content and the DLC season pass, and the Father Edition, which throws in a collector’s box, steelbook case, printed map, and exclusive figurine.
If you’d rather buy the game from elsewhere, you can also get it from Game or Argos in the UK, or GameStop or Best Buy in the US, along with plenty of other retailers too.
The game will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC, with Sony’s PlayStation having some kind of exclusivity, although details of the partnership are yet to be announced. It’s very likely it will have support for the more advanced features of the PS4 Pro and maybe even Xbox One Scorpio too.
The only other major potential platform is the Nintendo Switch. Ubisoft has already confirmed that it is developing a “wide variety” of games for the Switch, but it seems as if Far Cry 5 won’t be one of them.
The most recent Far Cry games have become best known for leading the way in terms of open-world first-person shooters. Far Cry 3 allowed players to explore a pair of enormous tropical islands, while Far Cry 4 offered the whole of the Himalayas to explore, so it’s likely that Far Cry 5 will offer a similarly expansive environment.
That environment is closer to home for some than previous games, as the game takes place in modern-day Montana in the northwest United States. As a member of law enforcement in the fictional Hope County, you’ ll come face-to-face with crazy cultists and dedicated militias in true, chaotic Far Cry fashion.
It’s been confirmed that Far Cry 5 will be around 20-30 hours long to complete. This is because Far Cry 5’s lead writer Drew Holmes told GamingBolt that it will be similar to previous games in the series in terms of length.
Ubisoft and AMD have confirmed Far Cry 5 (and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus) will support Rapid Packed Math, a new feature that is exclusive to AMD’s new RX Vega graphics cards. This should mean improved performance as it can do ‘two math instructions for the price of one’.
Lead writer Drew Holmes told GamingBolt that after deciding to set the game in the US, Montana was the team’s immediate choice.
“I think that there’s a great sense of frontier, great sense of wilderness, of danger, wildlife, there’s mountains, there’s big sky. There’s lots of places that feel unknown even though it is in the backyard.”
“So I think as soon as the team went there, ” he continued, “they started to meet the people there, and get a sense of, ‘Montanans are a very self-reliant type of person. They don’ t like to be pushed around.’ There’s a history of standoffish-ness and leave-me-alone with the state that I think worked really, really well with Far Cry. The list of places that Far Cry wanted to go after that just fell off the table. We said, ‘this is the spot, this is where we want to go. Now let’s think of an interesting villain that could populate that space’ .”
In a change to previous Far Cry games, Far Cry 5 will allow you to customise the look of the main character. Beyond being a junior deputy sheriff, the protagonist is a blank canvas. Some are speculating that the choices you make in terms of race (and possibly gender) could influence the way the story is told, and how others interact with you, although only time will tell.
Far Cry 5 pits you against Joseph, the bearded figure that posed like Jesus in the teaser image released by Ubisoft prior to the reveal. Joseph is the leader of a doomsday cult called ‘Project at Eden’s Gate’ and has swathes of underlings to help him carry out his work, along with other cult leaders (who all happen to be members of his family) .
However, while you’ ll go up against cultists in a big way, you’ ll also have the aid of many Hope County locals. Three of your key allies in Far Cry 5 are Pastor Jerome Jeffries, a clergyman armed to the teeth and ready to fight for what’s right, along with Mary May, a tavern owner who knows a thing or two about Molotov cocktails, and Nick Rye, a pilot that attached a gatling gun to his plane.
Animals will reportedly play a big role in Far Cry 5, and you’ll be able to befriend dogs and send them into battle for you. Boomer, one of three Guns for Hire already revealed by Ubisoft, is an angry dog who will take out your enemies and retrieve their guns for you. Early gameplay footage from Far Cry 5 even shows animals (a cow and bull) getting it on, reports Polygon, which is not something that has been shown in the series before.
Looking beyond the setting and its qwerky inhabitants, it is likely that players can expect Far Cry 5 to have less focus on a linear narrative and instead bring the open world elements even further to the fore. Ubisoft chief creative officer Serge Hascoet told Le Monde that his focus was on making “worlds that are interesting to me, even as a tourist, ” where “my actions will change the world.”
“I don’ t want the player to go through a story created by someone. We have games like that still, but I ask more and more that we let the player write their own story — that they set themselves a long-term goal, identify the opportunities that are open to them and choose not to follow a path that was decided for them.”
The company has also confirmed that Far Cry 5 will be co-op from beginning to end, allowing groups of friends to explore the open world of Hope County. You can get a better feel of the co-operative gameplay via the below trailer released by Ubisoft during its E3 2017 press conference.
However, according to Gamestar, only one of the players will get to keep their progress in co-op mode.
We’ ll be sure to update this article as soon as we have any more details about Far Cry 5, so check back in the future.

Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon latest news: Release date, new features, trailers

0

There’s a new trailer for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, coming soon to 3DS. Here’s what you need to know, including the Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon UK release date and gameplay.
Pokémon Sun and Moon came out for the 3DS late last year, but now they’re getting an update in the form of new Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon games which were announced by Nintendo and the Pokemon Company on 6 June.
Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon aren’t quite the Stars game we had been expecting, but it does look like they’ll introduce some fun new gameplay elements that’ll be enjoyable for both those who’ve yet to play Sun and Moon and those who have.
A new trailer for the upcoming game was released in mid-August (see above) , which shows a different side of the Alola Region. There are new buildings and landscapes, but also some ominous dark clouds cast by a legendary Pokémon.
Pokémon Sun and Moon was its fastest selling title to date with 3.7m copies sold in the Americas over the first two weeks.
The games will be joined by the release of Pokken Tournament for the Nintendo Switch in September, as well as ports of Pokemon Gold and Silver for the 3DS. See also: The most anticipated games of 2017
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are set to be released for 3DS on 17 November 2017 worldwide.
We think we’ll see more of the game during E3 2017 from 12 June.

While Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will still be set in the same Alola region as Sun and Moon, they’ll feature a whole new storyline as well as additional Pokémonto discover.
Months after the initial release of Pokemon Sun and Moon, the Pokemon Bank has finally been updated to support the two latest games in the series. Essentially, the Pokemon Bank is a service that allows Poké-players to transfer their favourite Pocket Monsters between the various iterations of Pokemon games. Pokemon Bank-supported games now include:
In addition to adding support, Nintendo has also released a helpful infographic to help players keep track of the transfer rules.
You heard that right, the latest rumour (and remember it’s only a rumour) is that Pokémon GO on your phone might be able to link up with Sun and Moon on your 3DS. According to a report in iDigitalTimes, the producers of the upcoming 3DS Sun and Moon are ‘ considering linkage with the smartphone app Pokemon GO.’ It rightfully points out that ‘ they have to do it in a way that doesn’ t break the balance of either game and even end up making both games boring. They still need to find an interesting idea that could make both games more interesting.
Following on from the original report, there was another rumour, even confirmation if you like, that this would be the case.
For starters Junichi Masuda, director for the game, said the team “want to have a kind of way to connect the two, or have a way for people who enjoyed one to enjoy some of their progress in the other, ” adding that functionality would be a while off.
There’s also some code spotted in Sun and Moon which references the game directly which is a good sign.
Read next: Best board games
Following on in the tradition of previous Pokémon games, players will have to choose one of three special Pokémon to be their first partner in Sun and Moon. In this version of Pokémon you’ll pick between newly discovered Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio.
As usual, they follow the format of grass, fire and water and you can see details of each below.
Name: Rowlet Category: Grass Quill Pokémon Height: 1′ 00″ Weight: 3.3lbs Type: Grass/Flying Starting Move: Leafage
The first of the potential partners is the highly adaptable Grass Quill Pokémon, Rowlet. This Pokémon can fly silently through the skies, sneaking up on its opponent without being noticed. It can attack its opponents using powerful kicks, and it can also attack from a distance using the razor-sharp leaves that form part of its feathers. Rowlet can survey its environment and turn its neck nearly 180 degrees from front to back, so it can see directly behind itself. When in battle, Rowlet turns its head to face its Trainer when waiting for instructions.
Name: Litten Category: Fire Cat Pokémon Height: 1′ 04″ Weight: 9.5lbs Type: Fire Starting Move: Ember
The cool-headed Fire Cat Pokémon, Litten, is the next choice for a first-partner Pokémon. Litten’s fur is rich in oils and is immensely flammable. It constantly grooms itself by licking its coat, collecting loose fur into balls. It then ignites these hairballs to create fireball attacks. When the time comes for Litten to molt, it burns off all of its fur in one glorious blaze.
Name: Popplio Category: Sea Lion Pokémon Height: 1′ 04″ Weight: 16.5lbs Type: Water Starting Move: Water Gun
The third possibility is the acrobatic Sea Lion Pokémon, Popplio. Popplio can create balloons made of water from its nose and utilize them to create a variety of different strategies and attacks in battle. This Pokémon is better at moving in the water than on land, and can swim at speeds over 25 mph. On land, it uses the elasticity of the balloons it creates to perform jumps and acrobatic stunts.
In yet another video, The Pokémon Company has revealed the final evolutions for the Sun and Moon starters – they are Decidueye, Incineroar and Primarina. The video also includes some new Pokémon, Alolan forms and trainers such as Red and Blue.
Two legendary Pokémon have been announced as Solgaleo and Lunala, which will feature in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon respectively. See more in the video below:
At E3 2016 Nintendo announced a further three Pokémon: Pikipek, Yungoos and Grubbin.
Pikipek, which likes to collect glittery objects and hide them in their food stores, can strike trees up to 16 times per second to bore holes – this powerful action can even shatter stone. Pikipek can also fire seeds at opponents with enough power to embed them into tree trunks.
Yungoos is an extremely hungry Pokémon, and when its stomach rumbles it gets pretty grumpy. It’s pretty much all about its stomach, but some Yungoos also possess the Stakeout ability, with their moves dealing twice the normal damage to any Pokémon that enters the field mid-battle.
Grubbin is a bug-type Pokémon with a strong jaw, munching away in battle and using its nashers to burrow into the ground. Sticky threads can be spat from its mouth and wrapped around trees, enabling Grubbin to swing between them a bit like Tarzan.

Intel 8th-gen packaging confirms 6-core desktop processors, new motherboard requirement

0

The juiciest rumors about desktop 8th-gen Core processors were just confirmed by Intel’s website.
Monday morning, in the shadow of the Great American Eclipse, Intel revealed its 8th-gen Core processors. Well, some of them anyway. The initial announcement is limited to low-power laptop CPUs driven by a refreshed version of Intel’s 7th-gen “Kaby Lake” architecture, and the company declined to offer more specifics about 8th-gen desktop processors. But Intel’s updated imagery on its Core i5 and Core i7 pages shined a light on the juiciest 8th-gen rumors anyway.
Zooming in the 8th-gen Core CPU retail packaging at the top of those pages confirm two big questions about the desktop parts, as Nathan Kirsch at Legit Reviews first noticed.
The most spectacular? Intel’s 8th-gen Core i7 desktop processors are raising their core count to battle the threat from AMD’s disruptive Ryzen processors. While all recent Core i7 processors had 4 cores and 8 threads, the next-gen chips will pack 6 cores and 12 threads, just like the most potent Ryzen 5 CPUs. (AMD’s Ryzen 7 chips have 8 cores and 16 threads.)
You can see the 8th-gen Core i7 retail packaging at right. Core i5 processors are also jumping to 6 cores, though as before, 8th-gen Core i5 chips will lack hyperthreading capabilities.
The core counts of the Core i5 and Core i7 chips suggest that rumors of entry-level Core i3 chips moving from today’s hyper-threaded dual-core chips to true quad-core CPUs, similar to AMD’s Ryzen 3 processors, may be correct.
The packaging also confirms what PCWorld and other outlets have already reported: Intel’s 8th-gen CPUs need a new 300-series motherboard to run. You won’ t be able to reuse a Z170- or Z270-series board from a Skylake or Kaby Lake system. It’s not unusual for Intel to require new motherboards every other generation, and the older ones likely aren’ t tuned for 6 core parts, but enthusiasts were still hoping to recycle their existing hardware with 14nm chips still hanging around. In contrast, AMD will support Ryzen’s AM4 motherboards until at least 2020.
While Intel hasn’ t revealed which CPU technologies are going into which chips—beyond today’s 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R announcements —the desktop versions are expected to use Coffee Lake cores. We’ ll know sooner than later, as Intel says consumer desktops using 8th-gen Core processors will appear later this year.

10 Sailors Remain Missing After USS John McCain Collides With Oil Tanker

Ten sailors remain missing after a U. S. missile destroyer was involved in a crash at sea off the waters of Singapore early Monday local time.
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Ten sailors remain missing after a U. S. missile destroyer was involved in a crash at sea off the waters of Singapore early Monday local time.
The Navy said the USS John McCain collided with an oil tanker while heading to Singapore on a routine port call in the South China Sea.
Video showed a gaping hole in the port side of the guided-missile destroyer.
“It’s hard to envision exactly how crowded a waterway like that can be at night, in the dark, waiting to come and go and trying to stay out of everyone else’s way, ” said retired Navy Capt. Kevin Eyes, who commanded three Navy cruisers.
President Donald Trump tweeted his support writing: “Thoughts & prayers are w/ our @ USNavy sailors aboard the # USSJohnSMcCain where search & rescue efforts are underway.”

Sen. John McCain tweeted, in part, “Cindy & I are keeping America’s sailors aboard the USS John S McCain in our prayers tonight – appreciate the work of search & rescue crews.”

— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) August 21,2017
This collision comes on the heels of another incident involving the USS Fitzgerald .
It was June 17 when the USS Fitzgerald collided with a container ship, killing seven sailors.
Just last week the Navy relieved the commander and two other senior leaders of their duties, saying inadequate leadership and flawed teamwork contributed to the crash.
Both Navy ships, the Fitzgerald and McCain, are among those in Asian waters equipped with the Aegis missile defense system, mentioned lately as one of the tools that could be used to counter any potential missile launches by North Korea.
The McCain is sailing under its own power and heading to port.
The U. S. Navy, along with Singapore and Malaysia are taking part in the search and rescue mission.
U. S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis confirms that the Navy will conduct a broad investigation into the collision in Southeast Asia between the USS John S. McCain and an oil tanker, and other recent Navy accidents at sea.
Mattis says the Navy is putting together a “broader inquiry” that also looks at the USS Fitzgerald accident in waters off Japan in June. Seven sailors died in that accident.

Katy Perry, Khloe Kardashian & More Celebs Get Excited For Historic Event – Hollywood Life

0

Celebrities react to the solar eclipse on August 21.
On August 21,2017, history will be made! Celebrities are waiting anxiously, just like us, for the total solar eclipse to pass over North America for the first time since 1979. It doesn’ t matter whether you’ re rich and famous, or just a totally normal person — this is a big, big deal that we’ ll all share equally. Celebs have to grab their eclipse safety glasses at 711 just like the rest of us! Katy Perry, 32, Cardi B, 24, and comedians like Chelsea Handler, 42, and Ben Schwartz, 46, are all on the eclipse train for sure!
They’ ve got the jokes. Katy shared a hilarious photo floating around social media of a man wearing glasses made out of eclipse brand gum wrappers and tried to pretend like she wasn’ t absolutely stoked for today’s event. Paris Hilton, 36, shared the iconic photo of herself wearing “hand glasses, ” captioning the pic, “Me trying to peek at the solar eclipse without “special” glasses”. Too funny!
Chelsea, as she has tended to do lately, went political with her tweet. She tweeted that her “fantasy” is President Donald Trump, 71, resigning or getting arrested while the eclipse occurs — and that it happens while he’s in his underwear. That’s a sight we can’ t unsee. Which brings us to an important note. Protect your eyes! As beautiful and wondrous this total eclipse is, it’s not worth burning your retina. Which will happen if you stare directly at the sun.
] Everything we learned as kids still stands: wear special safety glasses and don’ t take them off at any point. The totality — when the moon completely obscures the sun — may only last for a few seconds! But there are a ton of old wives’ tales that you can rest easy knowing aren’ t true — see what’s fact and fiction here! Celebrities excited about the eclipse (and you!) should totally watch our eclipse live stream to see the major event no matter where they live!
HollywoodLifers, are you excited to (safely) see the solar eclipse? Let us know!

5 witches share what they'll do during Monday's total solar eclipse

0

From burning presidential Tweets to blessing wands, here’s what modern witchcraft will look like during the big celestial event.
Monday’s total solar eclipse holds great significance. For most, it’s the first time we’ll ever experience such an astronomical event; the last eclipse of such scale with visibility in the U. S. happened in June 1918 and the following phenomenon in North America won’t come until April 2024 .
For one group in particular — witches — the rare celestial happening serves as an important moment for ritual, spiritual practice and magic. “There’s no specific actual ritual for the solar eclipse — it’s just a good time to do some magic, ” Jessica Cinquanta, a self-identifying witch, said in an interview. “The solar eclipse could bring about swift change, so people would do magic on something they want a quick result in. It stands for new beginnings, whether that’s ending a part of your life and starting a new one or something else, ” she said. “It’s really about change.”
Mic spoke to five witches across the country to learn of their plans for the big day. While all five will be active in their kind of witchcraft, every one of them is using the powers they sense in the sky above to impart some good on the world below. You can read about their intentions below.
“I’ve been working on a wand recently, ” 25-year-old Leonidas Schultz, a student at the Culinary Institute of America, said in an interview. “I’m using the occasion to do some empowering and blessing of it.” On Monday, Schultz is hosting a revelry — a pagan party, as he defined it — at his home. The sacred celebration will have food, drinks, dancing and fun. “There’s this inherent energy when people are together having a good time celebrating something, ” Schultz said. “It can be used in spell work or just as a way of bringing good luck to the community.”
Schultz has been carving his wand for almost a year; it’s the first one he’s made by hand, which has extra meaning because “there’s a deep belief in paganism that things you make with your own hands have more value, ” he said. This wand’s material comes from the wood of a holly tree that was struck by lightning, which he said is “a great symbol” because “a lightning strike is a symbol of where the Earth and the heavens meet.” For Schultz, “lightning is in some way the blessing or the curse of god wherever it strikes.”
With time, patience and skill, Schultz has been able to whittle the holly wood down to a measurement that’s equivalent to the length of his elbow to the tip of his middle finger. Making a sacred tool involves several steps, including the gathering of materials, forming of the object, cleansing, consecration and the empowering, he said.
For Schultz, an eclipse is a symbol of the union between the divine masculine (the sun) and the divine feminine (the moon) . “This all coming together during the day is a grand occurrence, rare and very powerful, Schultz said. “Being able to take advantage of that moment to present my wand to the gods seems very auspicious.”
Cinquanta will ring in her 36th birthday — which happens to be on the same day as the eclipse — with a hike at Anthony’s Nose trail in upstate New York. The information technician, who’s from Putnam County, New York, organized the event and spread the word in multiple witch-related groups through MeetUp.com. “It’s just a sight to be seen, ” Cinquanta said in an interview. “You don’t want to miss it.” Anyone — spell-believing or otherwise — can join her and her friends for a three-mile hike to a vantage point with “a great view over the Hudson where you can get an unobscured view of the eclipse, ” she said. So far Cinquanta has approximately 20 people coming. She’s providing everyone who joins with NASA-approved eclipse glasses so that all can enjoy the event safely.
As for her spiritual association with the day, Cinquanta is planning a kind of personal meditation. “When I go on the hike, it’s not going to look like anything, but I’m going to draw in on the energy [from the solar eclipse] . But later that night I’ll probably use that energy to do a spell to elicit a change, ” she said. Cinquanta said she’s working on changing her mindset: “The way I think about things — I want to let things roll off my back rather than hold onto them.” She said that, if anything, she’s using the events of the day and her magic to improve on her stress management.
This magic, which Cinquanta says for her is a form of meditation, is something she relies on to slow her mind down. L ater on, I can’t keep [this energy] — it’s not mine to keep — and I’ll push my wishes out into the universe.” Cinquanta said her wishes will have an extra boost from the eclipse energy.
Misti Kate*, a 36-year-old who works in the medical devices industry in Austin, Texas, says her witchcraft is devoid of religion (she does not identify as pagan) . She’s still undecided on whether she’ll take Monday off or extend her lunch break during the eclipse, but she does have clear-cut plans for the duration of the event. “Eclipses have always been seen as time when the world stops, ” she said over the phone. “It’s a powerful time to think about rebirth or changing or transformation. Its also a time for binding — it’s a great opportunity to bind things that no longer work for you and release them.”
“I’m going to be using a binding spell on that guy who calls himself our president, ” Misti Kate said. She plans to print out a picture of Donald Trump appearing angry, “his truest form, ” she described, as well as a collection of his cruelest tweets. She’ll then bind these papers together with a black or red cord, douse the whole thing in water and then burn it. With this ritual, Misti Kate said she’s “hoping to transform the man and the office moving forward.” She’ll likely keep the ashes of these Trump remnants in a little pouch that she’ll carry with her.
For Misti Kate, witchcraft is a way of taking action and accomplishing goals, particularly in moments where she feels otherwise helpless. “If I set an intention and I follow through with that spell I’ve made a physical representation of a mental intention that I have, ” she said. “And that’s very powerful for me because it strengthens my resolve when someone says something like, ‘Both sides are bad.’ Deciding not to stand up to people is a privilege, as I have as a white American woman. For me, my witchcraft [is] a way for me to find courage.”
Misti Kate says that she’s been practicing spiritual rituals to help combat her depression. She explained that while she knows her eclipse plan won’t instantaneously change who occupies the white house, the act is a reminder of her strength. “Obviously its not going to fix my depression over night — or at all, really, but a concrete gesture that makes me feel more powerful and makes me feel like I have a control over a situation.”
“I’ve been laughing all week about how this has been a crazy week for a lot of reasons — politically and in my personal life — and I keep saying, ‘Man, that eclipse is gonna feel good, ‘” Tini Howard, a 31-year-old comic book writer in North Carolina said in an interview. “It’s going to be a good time to exhale. It’s going to feel like a time to take a lot of these feelings and intentions I’m having and put them out into the world, ” she said.
On Aug. 21, Howard plans to tell both the sun about the things she loves and cares about: More specifically, she’ll be praying for her loved ones. Her close friend recently gave birth to a baby, and she’ll spend Monday putting her intentions toward this friend and her new child “to have a great life.
“Theres a lot of people in the world I’m seeking justice for, ” Howard said, hinting at those who may have suffered from decisions made by the current political administration. “A lot of what witches ask for is the same thing everyone asks for when they pray: love and happiness and protection for ourselves and our loved ones.” She’ll also likely write down some angry thoughts and burn them — “I definitely love burning things, ” she said.
Shell Selvans, 37, will be road-tripping from her home in California’s Bay Area to Oregon. She’s organizing the pilgrimage with other members from the CAYA Coven, San Francisco East Bay’s eclectic pagan interfaith coven at which she is a priestess. The plan is to go to a park along the river and watch the eclipse while it’s happening — nothing too complicated, as Selvans said she’ll be considering the physical journey as a spiritual pilgrimage from the moment she gets in the car until she arrives back home.
Besides being an ordained priestess at the coven, Selvans is a planetary scientist. “I’ve mostly studied Earth and other planets in our solar system, ” she said over the phone. “I think being a scientist is a natural product of being a curious human, ” Selvans said, explaining that she does not believe her profession and her faith are contradictory. “There’s this sense of awe and wonder that comes with being a scientist. People often associate awe or wonder with uniquely spiritual activities or gods, but [what I do for my job] produces a sense of awe, too.”
Selvans said the eclipse is a particularly exciting event for someone in her field, and is thrilled to see the widespread anticipation around the event. “It’s really sort of an interesting experience — a five-day road trip for a two-minute event. It’s amazing that something so brief has so much draw for people — I think it’s such a magical… or miraculous … or ethereal kind of event .”

Can You Wear Welding Glasses to Watch a Solar Eclipse?

Is it safe to wear welding glasses or a welder’s helmet to watch solar eclipse 2017? NASA says most are not a safe alternative.

The sun is covered by the moon during a total solar eclipse in the Indian city of Varanasi on July 22,2009.
The Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017 is here. Most retailers are out of solar eclipse glasses, and it’s probably too late to get them online, where you have to watch out for fakes anyway.
That has some people turning to their own drawers at home. A lot of people are wondering: Can you safely wear welding glasses or a welding helmet to watch the solar eclipse?
Most could be very dangerous to your eyes. If you are considering using them, you need to be scrupulous about following NASA’s safety precautions.
This is what NASA says about using welding glasses or helmets to watch the eclipse on its safety website:
Experts suggests that one widely available filter for safe solar viewing is welders glass of sufficiently high number. The only ones that are safe for direct viewing of the Sun with your eyes are those of Shade 12 or higher. These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder’s helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the Sun, make sure you know the filter’s shade number. If it’s less than 12 (and it probably is) , don’ t even think about using it to look at the Sun. Many people find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter — but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find.
According to 11Alive, an Atlanta television station, “Most welding glasses are not strong enough to keep your eyes safe, if you are watching the eclipse with them.”
The televisions station reported, “NASA recommends only using the darkest shades, 12 or higher, to view the eclipse. All the hardware stores we talked to were sold out of shades as low as shade 4.”
The American Astronomical Society lists eye safety tips and never mentions welding glasses as a way to protect your eyes. Your eyes are an extremely precious commodity. Why take a risk?
NASA reports that you can incur serious retinal damage to your eyes if you look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse.
NASA stresses that safety should be paramount. “The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as ‘eclipse glasses’ or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight, ” the space agency reports.

It’s just as dangerous to look at the eclipse through binoculars, a telescope, or camera without a proper solar eclipse filter. It’s very dangerous to wear regular sunglasses too.
What else can you do? There are DIY alternatives. NASA suggests the alternative method of the pinhole projection. “An alternative method for safe viewing of the partially eclipsed sun is pinhole projection (link is external) . For example, cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other, creating a waffle pattern. With your back to the sun, look at your hands’ shadow on the ground, ” the NASA safety website says.
“The little spaces between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, showing the sun as a crescent during the partial phases of the eclipse. Or just look at the shadow of a leafy tree during the partial eclipse; you’ ll see the ground dappled with crescent Suns projected by the tiny spaces between the leaves.”
Here are instructions for how to make a more elaborate solar eclipse viewing box (you don’ t look directly at the sun with it) , using a shoebox or cereal box:
