Analysis: Winners and losers from the Georgia special election

0

One takeaway: Republicans aren’t necessarily doomed by Trump’s unpopularity in highly affluent, suburban districts where he struggled in the presidential election.
After what seems like a years-long campaign and tens of millions of dollars spent on a special election that both national parties eyed as a hugely symbolic one, Republican Karen Handel emerged from the Georgia special election Tuesday night with a larger-than-expected, four-point victory.
The result set off a round of gloating from Republicans – up to and including those with the surname “Trump” – and some serious teeth-gnashing among Democrats, who were clearly and publicly frustrated by their inability to win a race despite a firm belief that Trump’s unpopularity is their ticket to winning elections.
Drawing those big, national conclusions from one out of 435 congressional districts – especially one that I argued Tuesday is highly unique in the Age of Trump – is always a fraught exercise. But here are some things we can say after Tuesday night, in the form of winners and losers.
In the end, it was a bad and expensive bet. They tried hard and lost, and Republicans tried hard and won, period. And it reinforces the idea that Republicans in such districts – i.e., highly affluent, suburban ones where Trump struggled – aren’ t necessarily doomed by Trump’s unpopularity. We saw that in the 2016 election, when Republicans kept winning these districts in spite of Trump. If that continues to be the case in 2018,Democrats’ task of winning back the majority just became much more difficult.
But it’s also true that Democrats went big in Georgia, and they couldn’ t put it together. They had nine weeks after the primary to get from 49 percent of the vote that day to 50 percent-plus-one on Tuesday, and they didn’ t do it. For a party still smarting from somehow losing a 2016 presidential race that was well within their grasp, they have to feel the need to do some soul-searching and figure out why their strategies aren’ t resulting in actual wins. Commence blood-letting.
Mostly, that’s come in the form of incumbent senators perhaps not really living in their home states – see: Richard Lugar, Pat Roberts and Mary Landrieu – but we’ ve also got Scott Brown’s ill-fated attempt to cross the border and win in New Hampshire (he wound up being a rare GOP loser in a toss-up race in a strong Republican year in 2014) and some other examples at the congressional level (see: Sean Eldridge) . At the very least, it’s got to give parties pause about plucking wealthy or well-known candidates to go district-shopping and raise big money from California, rather than picking someone with true ties to their potential constituents.

Fox News’ “The Five” co-host Greg Gutfeld accused Hollywood of “interference” and obstruction” in Georgia’s special congressional election on Tuesday night, comparing Hollywood celebrities to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Republican Handel beat Democrat Ossoff to win a high-stakes, high-cost Georgia race to fill Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, which Tom Price vacated to become Trump’s Health Secretary.
Gutfeld pointed out that 7,000 people from California donated to Ossoff, while he received cash from only 800 residents of his own district.
“That tells you who is behind him, people who don’ t even live there, ” Gutfeld said. “Celebrities like Alyssa Milano, Chelsea Handler… they’ re all over this election.”
Gutfeld compared Putin’s alleged failed attempt to meddle in the presidential election to Hollywood’s failed attempt to meddle in the George special election.
“How is this not similar? Here you have one state meddling in another… The only difference is the celebrities, who are way more obnoxious than Putin… You have aristocratic outsiders instructing the rubes on how to vote, undermining an election thousands of miles away, ” Gutfeld said. “Talk about interference, obstruction.”

Watch former Apple engineers and Scott Forstall discuss the creation of the iPhone

Last night at the Computer History Museum, former New York Times reporter John Markoff interviewed some of the original engineers who work on the first iPhone that was unveiled in January 2007. Hugo Fiennes, Nitin Ganatra, and Scott Herz all talked about their own experience working on this incredible project. Then, Scott Forstall looked back at his time at the company when he was leading software development.
Scott Forstall left the company in 2012 after the release of iOS 6. Less than a year later, Apple introduced iOS 7, the biggest redesign for the operating system. With that version, Apple moved away from the famous skeuomorphic apps and switched to flat design with a big emphasis on white space and transparent user interface elements.
While Forstall didn’ t really comment on his departure and iOS 7, it’s still fascinating to hear him talk about the early days of the iPhone. (And yes, it looks like he’s wearing the same shirt in yesterday’s interview and during his last WWDC presentation in 2012 pictured above)
As for the three engineers on the first panel, it’s crazy to see that they only knew about one part of the iPhone but discovered many of the things that made the iPhone special when Steve Jobs used it for the first time on stage.
If you have a couple of hours, here’s the video of the event:

Embattled Uber co-founder resigns from role as CEO

Travis Kalanick resigned from his role as Uber’s CEO Wednesday morning, June 21 after months of controversies and pressure from the company’s investors.
Travis Kalanick resigned from his role as Uber’s CEO Wednesday morning, June 21 after months of controversies and pressure from the company’s investors.
The Associated Press reports Uber’s board confirmed the move while saying its former CEO will take time off after his mother was killed in a boating accident and to give the company room to embrace “this new chapter.” It has not been made clear who will replace the 40-year-old man who helped start the ride-hailing company in 2009.
In a statement obtained by the New York Times, Kalanick said that he realized the company needed a change at the top and that he will remain on its board of directors.
“I love Uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life I have accepted the investors request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight, ” he said in the statement.
Wednesday’s move comes after months of controversies under Kalanick including sexual harassment in the workplace, trade secret theft allegations, a federal investigation and even a video of the former CEO berating an Uber driver.
The Justice Department remains investigating the ride-hailing company’s alleged use of phony software designed to get around carrying passengers without permission, A. P. reports.
“When you’re at war with customers, employees, service suppliers, you can’t build up a business model and Kalanick was at war with everyone, ” Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, told A. P.
“There is no business model in being at war.”
One of the key factors is the 40-year-old CEO’s resignation was when a former engineer penned a personal essay about the sexual harassment she faced at the company. Susan Fowler posted the essay in February, in which she said her manager propositioned her on her first day with the engineering team.
“When I reported the situation, I was told by both HR and upper management that even though this was clearly sexual harassment and he was propositioning me, it was this man’s first offense, and that they wouldn’t feel comfortable giving him anything other than a warning and a stern talking-to, ” she said.
“Upper management told me that he “was a high performer” (i.e. had stellar performance reviews from his superiors) and they wouldn’t feel comfortable punishing him for what was probably just an innocent mistake on his part.”
A top Uber executive, Amit Singhal, also left the company after he failed to disclose that the reason he left Google was because of sexual harassment allegations.
An Uber investigation resulted in the firing of 20 people, and former Attorney General Eric Holder said the male-dominated company didn’t have basic policies to protect against harassment.
Kalanick was forced resigned from President Donald Trump’s business advisory council after the company received flak after a widespread rider boycott. In addition, Waymo, Google’s self-driving car project, sued Uber while claiming betrayal and espionage.
After taking an Uber ride in February on Super Bowl Sunday, Kalanick was recorded verbally berating one of his drivers who was complaining about falling fares.
“You know what? Some people don’t like to take responsibility for their own s***. They blame everything in their life on somebody else, ” he yelled at the driver before he slammed the door as he and the two women flanking him exited the vehicle. “Good luck.”
A. P. reports that several top-level managers and employees have left the company in the past year, which includes the president and chief financial officer. Industry insiders have claimed the only way to take a step forward from world’s largest ride-hailing provider to a sustainable company was for Kalanick to step aside.

Rumänien: Sozialdemokraten stürzen eigenen Regierungschef

0

The Best Website Builders of 2017

0

Do you need a website for a personal project, organization, or small business? These easy online site builders let you build full-featured, mobile-friendly sites on a budget.
To get your message out these days, you probably rely on Facebook and Twitter, with maybe a helping of Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Tumblr. That’s sensible, but if you want an internet presence that truly represents you or your organization, you also need a customized website of your own. A real website, as opposed to a social media page, gives you complete control over design and content. This lends credibility to your business, organization, or personal brand. You can only look so distinctive on Facebook, but on your own site, you can realize a true brand image, offer products for sale, and integrate a multitude of third-party web services.
It’s never been easier to set up a professional-looking, design-forward website. Well-known site builders like Squarespace, Weebly, and Wix are constantly improving. And newer competitors, such as Strikingly and uKit, are popping up all the time with their own clever new twists on the process.
But let’s talk a little more about why you even need a webpage in this day of social media domination of the web. On a personal level, you probably wouldn’t want to send prospective employers to your Facebook page, so a personal website makes a lot more sense as an online, customized resume. Another reason worth consideration, for both personal and business sites, is that building your own site gives you endless design choices. You also get total control over products and services you may sell and how they’re delivered. Furthermore, having a real, dedicated site makes a business seem more authoritative and trustworthy than a Facebook or Tumblr presence can on its own (though you should certainly also consider those services as elements of your online presence) .
Getting your own website used to require a lot of tech wizardry, such as knowledge of servers, HTML, site registrars, and web hosting services. Thankfully, we now live in the age of easy online site builders. The services included here let you make a well-designed, mobile-capable site with minimal technical knowledge. They can even take a small or sole-proprietor business to profitability, with buy links, online stores, and other money-making options.
Larger businesses spend thousands of dollars to get their custom-designed and programmed sites, but there’s no need for smaller organizations and individuals to go to that kind of expense. For about $8 per month (or around $25 if you’re selling products) and a few hours of your time, the services included here can help you create a unique, attractive website.
Several of the services included here offer free options, too. If you choose that path, however, your site will include branding from the provider, which will necessarily make your site less impressive to savvy surfers—and shoppers. Free offers vary greatly in the allowed storage and bandwidth, so read the small print to find out how much you can get with each provider. Weebly and Wix are among the most generous with their free offerings, if that’s the way you want to go.
With all these services, you build everything yourself using simple drag-and-drop interfaces. The services even let you include snazzy items such as social-share buttons, photo galleries, blogs, and media players. Some even let you restrict viewing with a password and let you have people join up as members of your site (see the table) .
All of the web services listed here have you start by choosing from a selection of templates for your site. The better ones, such as Duda, Squarespace, Weebly, and Wix, use templates that automatically reformat your site for viewing on mobile devices. They also offer specifically targeted templates based on your site’s purpose, such as for promoting a bakery’s sales, getting gigs for a musician, or keeping wedding guests informed. Some, such as Squarespace, Strikingly, and uKit, restrict you to placing page objects in spots that won’t make your site look garish, which can be an advantage if design isn’t your forte. Other builders offer more freedom; if that’s what you’re looking for, check out Webs or Wix.
Any site builder that wants to call itself modern these days must be capable of producing sites that play well on mobile, and all of those listed here can do so to some extent. Some, such as Squarespace and Weebly, use strictly responsive-design approaches to create a mobile site from what you built for the web.
Responsive design is all the rage in web design these days, but, in terms of SEO, search engines really just care that a site displays suitably on mobile screen sizes. Both Bing and Google have pages where you can enter your URL to see if your site plays on mobile acceptably. They’re not concerned about whether it stretches as you increase screen size, in true responsive fashion. The responsive approach of uKit and Weeby, however, means you get no control over the mobile-only view. Wix, by contrast, offers a mobile-site preview and lets you make customizations that only apply to mobile viewing. For example, you may want a splash page to welcome mobile viewers, or you may want to leave out an element that doesn’t work well on the smaller screens.
Let’s face it, one of the things we like best about the web is looking at pictures. The site builders here all offer some degree of photo and gallery display. Some, like Squarespace and Wix, also offer loads of stock photography you can use. Some let you touch up images with editing tools such as cropping, brightness, and in some cases even Instagram-like filters. Others, such as Webs and uKit offer no photo editing at all, aside from resizing and positioning. Photo gallery options also vary widely. For example, Weebly offers a whole gallery of styles for your online galleries, while others like Duda and GoDaddy are more limited in image-gallery options.
Of course, if you want to go all out for sales, you’ll want to move up to a dedicated web shopping cart service like Shopify, but that’s a step you might not be ready to take. All of the services here offer some ability to sell items from your site, if only in the form of a PayPal button, but some don’t offer even that in free accounts.
More advanced options found in some builders let you process credit card payments and add your own cart and checkout pages. The more powerful site builders include product promotions, email marketing, and inventory and shipping tools. Only a couple of these builders let you put ads on your site, though most of them allow some degree of custom HTML inclusion.
All of the site builders here let you put Facebook Like and Twitter Follow buttons on your pages, and some even let you include feeds from the social networks. Some also give you help building a Facebook Page and tying it into your site design and updates. Many products offer some sort of SEO tools, but too often this is just a form on which you can enter meta tags. You’re mostly left to wrestle with that black magic known as SEO for yourself. It’s very important to submit and verify your site to the search engines, unless you don’t want anyone to find it.
Most of the products here can tell you about site traffic, though the amount of detail varies greatly among them, and it’s often tied to premium account levels. For example, Weebly can not only show you page views and unique visitors for each day of the month, but also search terms used to get to the site, referring sites, and top-visited pages. Wix and uKit, at the other end, have nothing in the way of built-in site stats, instead requiring you to create your own Google Analytics account, and even that requires a paid account. Another drawback of that approach is that you can only see traffic from the preceding day and earlier; it’s not up-to-the-minute, or even the hour.
One downside of most of these services is that, should you someday want to move to another host, you’ll likely be out of luck, because of the custom code they use to display your site. Only a few services let you take your site to another web hosting service: The most complete example of this is Weebly, which lets you download the standard site server folders. Squarespace offers some transferability by letting you output your site in standard WordPress format, which you could take to another provider that specializes in managed WordPress hosting. Boldgrid, which doesn’t currently make the cutoff for this table, also offers the ability to transfer some elements of your site.
As you can see, there are quite a few factors to consider when choosing an easy online website builder. Read the blurbs and then click through to the linked reviews below to find the one that best suits your needs. And don’t hesitate to chime in below in the comments section to report your experience with a site builder, or praise one that’s not included.

Queen's elderly husband Prince Philip in London hospital

0

LONDON (AP) — Prince Philip, the elderly husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has been hospitalized
LONDON (AP) — Prince Philip, the elderly husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has been hospitalized with an infection but is said by Buckingham Palace to be out of bed and in good spirits.
The palace didn’t paint a dire picture of his situation, but there are concerns for Philip because of his advanced age. He turned 96 earlier this month, and in May announced that he was stepping down from public life.
He seemed in fine shape Tuesday afternoon at the Royal Ascot horse races, wearing a formal suit and top hat despite sweltering heat at an outing with the queen and senior family members.
Later that night, however, a physician advised him to seek hospital treatment for an infection. The palace said the infection was related to an existing condition that wasn’t made public.
He traveled to King Edward VII Hospital in London by private car, not ambulance. Buckingham Palace said Philip was admitted as a precautionary measure.
The queen, 91, maintained her official schedule Wednesday, giving a speech outlining the government’s legislative plan in Parliament, and attending the Royal Ascot horse races in the afternoon as had long been planned.
She traditionally attends each session of the racing event, one of the highlights of the summer season.
Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, said in May he was cutting down his public appearances and wouldn’t take on new charity roles after more than six decades of service.
He has suffered a blocked coronary artery and a severe bladder infection in recent years but has been in generally good health.
When he announced he was stepping back from public life, he joked that it was getting harder for him to keep standing up. But he has never seemed tired in public, and always walks with nearly perfect military bearing.
Philip still attends summer garden parties with the queen, hosting more than 2,000 guests at a time, and has maintained his presence at important ceremonial events, including the Trooping the Color procession earlier this month.
The queen and Philip both had suffered from severe cases of the flu at Christmas.
